Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has retired from international cricket.

The 36-year-old quit Tests and one-day internationals in 2015, but wanted to keep playing Twenty20s despite stepping down as captain in April 2016.

"I have said goodbye to international cricket," said the all-rounder, who played 27 Tests, 398 ODIs and 98 T20s.

SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates: Legendary Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi on Sunday announced his retirement from international cricket, ending an illustrious and sometimes controversial 21-year career.

The 36-year-old star had already quit Tests in 2010 and ODI cricket after the 2015 World Cup but still skippered the Pakistan Twenty20 team at the 2016 world championships in India.

He stepped down as captain after the tournament although he retained his slender hopes of continuing his career in the sport´s shortest format as a player.

Afridi had been a fan favourite since he burst onto the scene in 1996, striking a 37-ball century against Sri Lanka in only his second match to set a world record that was unbeaten for 17 years.

He became known as a bowling all-rounder in the second half of his career and was instrumental in Pakistan´s early successes in Twenty20, including their 2009 victory.

Afridi finishes his international career having played just 27 Test matches which yielded 1,176 runs with a highest score of 156 and 48 wickets.

He played 398 one-day internationals with 8,064 runs, a highest score of 124 while taking 395 wickets with his leg spin.

His Twenty20 international career saw him play 98 matches with 1,405 runs and 97 wickets.

. . . . .
He was a legend at his prime. No doubt he alongside Jayasuriya taught the world how to play modern cricket.

He wasn't the best batsmen in our team but he was probabably the best all rounder we produced in our cricketing history, if not the second best

He won us most number of matches than any other player I think s with that merit he will always stand among the legends

. .
Finally! though he had the x-factor which many cricketers of 90s had it in Pakistani team.
Should had batted up the order especially in the 20-20 cricket which is tailor made for players like him.

Afridi is a great cricketer. It is not easy to play international cricket for so long time. However, everything has a limit. If he is unable to contribute positively for his team, it is a time to retire. Good luck to Afridi. He can join Waquar and Wasim and shoeb as the commentator.

. . .
I faintly remember being making a post that "i will miss him" in similar thread few months ago.
And today again this thread ?

He should have retired 5 years ago.
