The S-400 Triumf system has been in service for over 10 years and is regarded as the most state of the art air defense system but its operationality in the field and overall performance is marred with uncertainty and incredulity.

Theoretically, this defense system is considered capable of engaging different aerial targets that includes unmanned aerial vehicles, aircrafts, ballistic and cruise missiles within 400kilometers and at an altitude of up to 30 kilometers. There were debates in the media regarding its capability. Later on Russian political statements, despite their previous promotion of S-400’s effectiveness, starting weakening when Russian senior officials agreed to the fact that further enhancements were required for making the system more defense efficient.

The effectiveness or the capabilities of this system has not been verified by a third party and it raises questions about its standards. It should.be reckoned that the S-400 AD system has not yet been tested against the modern missile technology, specifically of US and Pakistani origin.

It looks obvious that the manufacturers of this system would need some substantial upgrades in this system in order to operate against / counter Tomahawks cruise missile, that has an enhanced range of 690 miles and is capable of avoiding interception by skimming the earth’s surface along with following complicated paths to a hostile target.

It’s also interesting to know that the Pakistan’s missile technology was planned and designed with the intend to breach the defensive systems such as S-400. Pakistan’s indigenous cruise missiles such as Babur, Raad, and Ababeel have the potential to penetrate the layered defensive layer of S-400 AD system and engage the desired location with near perfection.

International defense professionals have also classified Babur as the Pakistani version of US Tomahawk cruise missile. Unique resemblance between the two cruise missiles have also been identified by a senior US defence expert lately. Technically, maneuverability of cruise missile is considered as a technological edge / advancement over ballistic missile.

As witnessed in Syria, the ratio of of S-400’s missiles hitting their targets is not 100 %, despite the high Russian assertions of having the ability to simultaneously engage numerous inbound hostile targets.

Therefore, Pakistani Ababeel missile has full capability of countering the effectiveness of S-400 systems at mid-course and the terminal stage by launching several warheads with inbuilt decoys to deplete the interceptor missiles.

Gen Khalid Kidwai, Ex Commander of Pakistan’s strategic force command, referred Shaheen-3 as Pakistan’s reply to India’s so called second capability. The in built Multiple Independent Re-entry Vehicle technology of Shaheen-3 can effectively pierce the blanket of S-400 air defense system and dissuade Indian second strike capability from the Andaman and Nicobar islands. The combination of deterrence features of Shaheen 3 can also be explained by the cutting-edge terminal guidance system on board this missile. Hostile forces have been taken by huge surprise by Pakistan’s own second strike ability, which has been attained through Submarine Launched missile system, Babur 3.

Only 90 seconds to hit Delhi sounds scary.... When I look at India Pakistan map Mumbai is almost on the same distance as Delhi from Pakistan southern border.... So it may take lesser time for mach 7+ ballistic missile to hit Mumbai also which is really worrisome.....

Unfortunately I can't see any answer to this threat in our arsenal except midium range homemade Akash sams.... They are deadly but can they protect Mumbai from something like ballistic missile?

Fact is we are not heavily air guarded countries like USA, UK, Russia, China, Israel or France with long range air defence systems....

AAD and PAD will not be operational before 2025/26.... What is the status of Akash NG???
