Security forces raiding two militant hideouts in Moulvibazar

Security forces in Moulvibazar have thrown a cordon around two houses possibly used as militant hideouts within hours of the end of 'Operation Twilight' in neighbouring district of Sylhet.

Gunfire and explosions have been reported from one of the houses surrounded by the security forces.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said the two houses have been cordoned off since early on Wednesday.

One of the houses is located at Barhahaat neighbourhood of the district town, the other 18 km away in Sadar Upazila's Fatehpur village, said Srimangal-based RAB camp's chief ASP Mainuddin.

"RAB personnel have reached the spot. A counter-terrorism unit team from Dhaka is also there," he told bdnews24.com.

Counter-terrorism officer Mahibul Islam, who is on the spot, said they received inputs of the Moulvibazar houses after busting the terror dens in Chittagong's Sitakunda and Sylhet.


"The intelligence input on the house in Barhahaat was confirmed last night. Inputs for the house at Sarkarbazar (at Fatehpur Village) were received early in morning," he said.

Deputy Commissioner Islam said that bullets were fired and grenades were hurled at police from the house in Fatehpur Village. "The police also opened fire."


He said they have sealed off the two houses and were trying to establish contact with the suspected militants inside. "They are yet to say anything. But we will keep on trying in line with our operational strategy."

As the raids started early in the morning, power and gas supplies in the areas have been disconnected.

Police said the houses are owned by expatriates Saifur Sabbir and Atabbar Mia, who live in London.

Four suspected militants, including a woman, have been killed in the assault while two explosions on the street outside the building left six persons, including two police officers, dead.

Within 12 hours of the army declaring that the operation ended on Tuesday afternoon, the Moulvibazar raids started early on Wednesday.

Police in Comilla have moved to raid a suspected militant hide out as anti-terror raids are underway on in the northeastern district of Moulvibazar.

Members from the counter-terrorism unit have sealed off a house in Kotbari area on Wednesday afternoon, said Superintendent of Police Shah Abid Hossain.

A counter-terrorism officer told bdnews24.com, "We received inputs on this house after several militant hideouts have been busted out recently."

He, however, did not reveal any details.

7:50pm- No gunfire or explosions heard from the Nasirpur hideout since 7:22pm. Ambulances and police vehicles are seen heading towards the area.

Sylhet range DIG Kamrul Ahsan says that the Nasirpur hideout has been brought under the control of the SWAT team. However, further operations and examination of the building will be suspended till morning as there may be IEDs, he adds. The area will remain cordoned off till morning.

SWAT will also begin operations at the Borohat den in the morning, as they were impeded by low visibility. The area is still cordoned off.

There is a local election in Comilla tomorrow (Mayoral) - the CEC has essentially ordered that the operation there be held back until the voting is over tomorrow afternoon.

If anything the election must be postponed to a later date. No one should compromise on public safety. Secondly, it just means more suffering for people living in neighborhood of the den who will be without power and gas. Not to mention Section 144.

Completely agree. The CEC made the call - and the govt decided to go along with it so avoid criticism about the election being 'influenced' because voters were afraid to come out and vote

umm...how is this any better? Not to mention - forget appearances, in what world is a mayoral election more important than ending a stalemate with a terrorist (and as you point out...a scenario where they've more than likely already cut gas and electricity lines in that particular street).

Push the election back a day to Friday - hell, it'll probably help with turnout with it being the weekend!

The problem is that force alone cannot solve this problem.

The root cause of extremism (social marginalization, lack of economic opportunities, lack of State control over mosques/madrassas/Jummah khutbaz, etc.) need to be tackled as well. Kinetic Ops + Aggressive De-Radicalization is the key.

That doesn't mean social marginalization or any of my other points don't apply.

Kinetic Ops + De-radicalization = win. You can kill all the clones coming out of a factory but can never stop or reduce the supply till you target the raw materials the factory uses to create them.
