KARACHI: The Pakistan Navy is keeping its main battleships away from Karachi, and has moved them to another port in Ormara, Balochistan, as security threats continue, sources in the navy say.

The navy sent its warships away from its main base in Karachi as a “precautionary measure” after a 16-hour siege of its main naval airbase, PNS Mehran. The commando-style gun and rocket-propelled grenade attacks resulted in the destruction of two P3C Orion airplanes – which were key naval assets.

Since the terrorist attack, battleships have been stationed in Ormara, navy sources say.

According to one person familiar with the matter, the navy chief ordered the immediate movement of an entire fleet after the PNS Mehran attack keeping in view the all-time high security threats, which continue to loom even today. The May 22 base attack occurred just weeks after three navy buses were bombed in the city on April 26 and April 28.

However, another senior navy official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that not an entire fleet, but “definitely quite a few” warships had to be moved to Ormara for security reasons after the attack. He added that, despite the movement, Karachi remains secure since there are other naval assets in place guarding the city.

A Pakistan Navy spokesperson declined to comment on the report and said that the navy does not comment on “operational details.”

Senior retired navy and air force officials, however, welcomed the move and termed the navy chief’s decision as “pragmatic” and “positive”.

Retired Vice Admiral Tanvir Ahmed said that one of the golden rules in warfare, especially when facing a threat from an unknown enemy, is to disperse your assets in as many bases as you can. “Never put all your eggs in one basket,” he said.

Ahmed said it would be wrong to portray that the navy felt so threatened by four terrorists that it had to move away its warships from their main harbor in Karachi. “It’s not a question of fear, but a matter of tactic,” he said.

Retired Vice Admiral Javed Iqbal underlined another important benefit of the move: “Unlike many navy bases in Karachi, such as Mehran, that are in the centre of residential areas, Ormara is a far off base,” he said, adding that any terrorist there would be spotted from miles away.

He said the movement of ships to Ormara would give “strategic depth” and better defence positions to the navy. He also rejected the notion that the fear factor may have played a major role in the decision. “I’ve been a commando myself and I can tell you this is a brilliant tactical move,” he said.

Retired Air Vice-Marshal Shahzad Chaudhry said the navy has been keeping its assets at the Ormara port for quite some time, but obviously it was not as huge as the “home base” of Karachi. He said that, further down Ormara, some aerial assets have also been kept at Pasni in the past, adding that moving assets is a sensible move.

Hi Mr. Xestan, thanks for this post. I was just about to post it. It is sad to see that the PN cannot be safe in its own land. How is the PN expected to fight with an outside party when the terror comes from within...

Have you read the article? Like Vice Admiral (R) Tanvir Ahmad said, it's not about fear, it's a precautionary move, a tactical one.

so whats gonna happen to the Orions any replacements ?

Better to be safe than sorry

Hi, yes I read the article twice. I agree with the PN high command's decision. What I am commenting is on is that Pakistan should not be in this position in the first place. However, I also do agree that the PN should have a few more larger naval bases, as Karachi is a bit too rich and big of a target.

Where there is a will , there is a way ....
for fight we need will .....the way will be formed by itself........:woot:

If we had Helicopter gun ships , I am sure , that Karachi would be safer place as no one would be able to outrun the police on bikes or cars

UAV and Helicopters are must in order to curb violence in Karachi

...........gunships?
nobody uses GUNSHIPS in a city!
however, i agree UAV would be pretty good in monitoring these unrest areas in karachi.
btw Rangers already has a couple of Bell 206 choppers in police support role..

Why dont you guys just setup rings of security around karachi port like IN has done i have been there mumbai port there are eyes every were looking at your every move you do just one thing wrong you will be taken in

Hi, well some people like the Israelis have used gunships in civilian areas.

One other point complicating matters of security at PNS Mehran is the illegal encroachment and construction. Someone has to get the political will to remove these illegal buildings.

Daily Times - Leading News Resource of Pakistan

Outside the PNS Mehran base, there was a wide area with unauthorised and encroached housing of many residents and after the attack on the defence base, the security personnel swiped the area, the official informed.

Hope they are used for the reasons they were acquired for. Pakistan has a history of using assetts not meant for. More than half of Police forced is used for dinatorories security and escorts. You will not believe that the ambulances at Jinnah hospitals were once used to get Nihari from Saddar in the morning. They had no other use. Has any one seen an official/hospital ambulance other than Edhi's and Chibba's in emergency situations (?)

I will not be surprised if these helicopters are more for Sahib's sawari than Sind's security.

I for sure know a guy who was "personally" transported in a rangers / police (not sure exactly) chopper. The concerned person lives in a 1000 yard house near Malir cantt and is in good connection with the country political and millitry brass.

JINNAH NAVAL BASE at Ormara is indeed a very secure and capable base. Although newly developed, moving a major chunk of PN Armada to JNB is a good move as the base infrastructure will now develop much faster compared to only having a few minor boats parked there. Also and militarily, JNB is also difficult to neutralize by an enemy in the time of war owing to its proximity and its land mass feature. So all in all a good and timely decision by CNS.
