Secularism to go from Nepal constitution

Kathmandu, July 27 (IANS) In a major change, Nepal's political parties have agreed to remove the word "secularism" from the new constitution.

Nepal was declared a secular country in 2007 after Nepal's hardcore Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist joined mainstream politics after a decade-long insurgency that killed over 13,000 people.

The decision ended Nepal's century-old identity as the world's only Hindu kingdom. Over 80 percent of Nepal's population is Hindu.

The political parties were forced to take a U-turn after millions of people, in their suggestions and feedback on the new constitution, called for the removal of the word "secularism".

A majority of people wanted "secularism" to be replaced by "Hindu" or "religious freedom", according to Nepal's Constituent Assembly that is now busy studying people's views vis-a-vis the new constitution.

Nepal is in the verge of promulgating the new constitution.

"The word secularism does not fit. So we are replacing it by another word," UCPN-Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda told the media on Monday.

"The word has irked people... It has hurt the sentiments of millions," he said. "We must respect the verdict of the people."

The Nepali Congress, the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist and the Madeshi-based political parties also wanted "secularism" to go.

Other feedbacks from people included a directly elected prime minister or president.

Evangelism is also going to be made illegal in Nepal so is religious conversion. Way to go Nepal!!! It is time to revert back to being a proud Hindu country.

. . . . . . .
Nepal also wants A directly elected prime minister ...excellent idea in South Asia. India should also adopt.

. . .
Christian lobbies have already started crying. However constitution should ensure freedom of religion and do not become like Saudia states.
Religion is a personal choice.

Put them behind bars a week before the constitution is to changed, so by the time they come out, constitutions is already changed. I am saying cuz they will make more noise as the date comes near.

Way to go Nepal :enjoy:

We need to preserve Nepal's religious unity & this is the only way possible

Secularism ie the separation of state institutions from religious institutions is not a bad thing...in fact it is IMO a very good thing. I do not think that dated religious laws replacing modern jurisprudence is progressive.

Secularism is getting such a bad rap in South Asia because of the misuse of the word by Indian political parties for more than half a century as a cover for vote bank appeasement and blatantly unjust policies.

Secularism in India is now seen as code for Hindu bashing and/or special unfair privileges for Muslims/ minorities. That is not what secularism means. It is a shame that the term secular has been so misused and bent out of shape for political gains.
