One person has reportedly been killed and 66 wounded when clashes erupted outside a Coptic cathedral in Cairo after funeral prayers were held for four Christians killed in sectarian violence.

There are conflicting reports on how exactly the clashes erupted. AFP, citing witnesses, writes that mourners who were chanting against the ruling Muslim Brotherhood were pelted with stones as they left the church. Egypt Independent writes that the violence broke out after unknown assailants attacked people attending the church service held at St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in the Abbasseya neighborhood in the Egyptian capital.

One person was reported dead at the nearby Demerdash hospital, reported satellite channel ONtv, citing the head of the ambulance services.

The victim was killed after having been struck by birdshot outside the cathedral, said the head of the Egyptian Ambulance Organization, Mohamed Sultan, reports Ahram Online.

The Health Ministry confirmed at least 66 wounded in the clashes, Egypt Independent wrote. Two of the injured are said to be in a critical condition.

Riot police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

“Any attack against the cathedral is like an attack on me personally”, the Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi told the Coptic Pope Tawadros II over the phone, state agency MENA reports.

Meanwhile, “Men continue to flood the Cathedral, some holding sticks, rocks, ” Egypt Independent reports on Twitter. “Outside people chant against the regime amid periodic loud booming sounds.”

Pope Tawadros II has issued an official statement urging the Egyptian people to exercise "wisdom and restraint."

Confrontations between Christians and Muslims have increased in the Muslim-majority Egypt after the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

On Saturday, sectarian violence left four Coptic Christians and one Muslim dead in al-Khusus, northeast of Cairo.

Mourners at funeral for four Christians killed on Saturday attacked as they leave cathedral, while police stand by

Police and armed civilians have laid siege to the seat of the Coptic church in Cairo, killing one person and injuring at least 21, as a funeral for four Christians killed in sectarian clashes on Saturday descended into chaos.

Thousands of mourners were attacked as they tried to leave Egypt's largest cathedral, forcing them back inside the cathedral precinct and sparking a siege that lasted all afternoon and stretched into the night. Police fired teargas over the cathedral walls and stood by as unknown men armed with birdshot, knives and petrol bombs scaled nearby buildings to attack those inside the church grounds.

Western democracy.... all they achieved is destruction and death... death to that "freedom'

The prophet (SA) called Muslims to take care of Egyptian Qubts and Christians.

(الله الله في قبطِ مِصرَ؛ فإنَّكم ستظهرونَ عليهم، ويكونُون لكم عُدَّةً وأعواناً في سبيل الله ). و قال : أخرجه [الطبراني وهو صحيح]

regarding Jordan? yes there should be a homemade revolution.. since Jordan is a great ally with Israel.. and I think that Jordan forgot its duty as an Arab country, and followed the west.. and the MB is not a good solution for Jordan.. because we saw MB in Egypt, and they still with the west and Israel..

Do you like this current turkish government?
I know your answer, democrasy brought them to power.
So,you think in a country where you can fool people and buy votes its good to have democrasy?
Look at the arab spring, what did it bring, democrasy people better of now?

Do you think Ataturk goofed?

the Empire had crumbled and was in shambles and shards

Sultanic excesses on one hand and Arab betrayal on the other seemed to have moved his vision for Turkish Republic away from the at-the-time prevailing "backwardsness" of the Middle East region

Ataturk was well ahead of his time. Today Turkiye is a Muslim country with strong institutions and good law & order situation. Overall - despite some ongoing issues - an overall success.

Turks however aren't homogeneous; they all have different political beliefs. Most seem to respect their leader AtaTurk and I understand why they do.
