  • State broadcaster cuts to shots of coaches rather than show fans without masks in Qatar
  • The country is the last major economy still attempting to stamp out the domestic spread of Covid-19

China’s state broadcaster is cutting close-up shots of maskless fans at the Qatar World Cup, after early coverage sparked anger at home where street protests have erupted over harsh Covid-19 restrictions.
The country is the last major economy still attempting to stamp out the domestic spread of Covid-19 with snap lockdowns, lengthy quarantines and mass testing campaigns.

During a live broadcast of Sunday’s group game between Japan and Costa Rica, state broadcaster CCTV Sports replaced close-up shots of maskless fans waving flags with images of players, officials or the football stadium.
Broadcasters had already taken action to cut out crowd shots, doing exactly the same for the game between Australia and Tunisia, a move that was quickly picked up by social media.

CCTV Sports showed distant shots of the crowd where it was difficult to make out individual faces, and fewer crowd shots compared to the live telecast of the same game on online platforms including Douyin -- China’s version of TikTok.

Tens of millions of people in major cities including Beijing, Guangzhou and Chongqing were under some form of lockdown as of Sunday -- a contrast with the raucous World Cup crowds that have infuriated many Chinese social media users.
An open letter questioning the country’s Covid-19 policies and asking if China was “on the same planet” as Qatar spread on the popular WeChat messaging app on Tuesday, before censors removed it from the platform.

Hundreds of people took to the streets in Beijing and Shanghai on Sunday to protest against China’s zero-Covid policy in a rare outpouring of public anger against the state.

This can't be real.. Also If China is still fighting covid they need to relax that as Covid19 has fizzled out

. .
Kinda amazing how some places just struggle with Covid and some places feel like Covid never happens.
How did Qatar do it?

Depends on the pop size, smaller countries tend to have less deaths. Imagine 4 mil dead Chinese using US metrucs.

Other than building immunity through infections and vaccinations, another important factor is demographics.

Singapore's stats:

As we can see, the death rate really spikes for those aged 80 and above.

US stats:

1669611951594.png

Those above age 85 currently accounts for 38% of deaths in the US, even though they make up for 1.8% of the population.
Those above age 65 currently accounts for almost 90% of deaths in the US, even though they make up for 16.8% of the population.

Qatar demographics:

In Qatar, where the majority of the population are young migrants from South Asia, the share of those aged above 80 is only 0.12% or 3k+ people. Those aged 65+ accounts for only 1.16% of the population or ~32K people.

So only a very tiny proportion of their population is at risk.

I have personally never seen a house on fire.
Must mean fire fighters are liars and we should eliminate their jobs.

Covid was never taken seriously by South America and it is not an issue today. A lot of the issues surrounding covid are based on psychological factors.

How televising the 1987 NBA finals helped destroy the USSR

That changed in 1987 (due to an interest the Russians had with basketball) when the Soviet Government allowed the NBA Finals to be televised. The sharp-eyed Russians not only were watching the players on the court but also noticed the happy spectators in the stands and the tv commercials (something new to them) for the latest consumer products/cars...this then made them immediately question the validity of the official narrative which had been sold to them for decades.

CCTV is not very popular.

Which CCTV channel?

It's actually free for foreigners on their website

This is CCTV4 for free on Youtube.
A whole 574 people worldwide are watching it for free...that's a big audience for Chinese TV.
