Scientists excited about India’s own GPS

36000km + 36000km = 72000km.
Add the time it takes for transmitting station+satellite+receiving station to process the signal....
that will be a delay of a second....
this does not count as real time position update.....
Can you explain us why the signal has to travel 72000 km.........transmitting station and receiving stations are there to monitor and control the satellite.The reference station will be used for GAGAN which will used Airport Authority of India.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has decided to implement an indigenous Satellite-Based Regional GPS Augmentation System also known as Space-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) as part of the Satellite-Based Communications, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS)/Air Traffic Management (ATM) plan for civil aviation. The Indian SBAS system has been given an acronym GAGAN - GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation. A national plan for satellite navigation including implementation of Technology Demonstration System (TDS) over the Indian air space as a proof of concept has been prepared jointly by Airports Authority of India (AAI) and ISRO. TDS was successfully completed during 2007 by installing eight Indian Reference Stations (INRESs) at eight Indian airports and linked to the Master Control Center (MCC) located near Bangalore.

The next major milestone in GAGAN is the conduct of PSAT (Preliminary System Acceptance Testing) which has been successfully completed in Dec 2010. The first GAGAN navigation payload is slated on GSAT-8 which was launched on May 21, 2011. The second GAGAN payload is scheduled to be launched on GSAT-10 in the first quarter of 2012. The third GAGAN payload is planned on another GEO satellite.

VK saraswhat said its the maximum range agni V can have if they reduced the weight of warhead a little...
And in this test, the weapon was loaded with less fuel than it can actually carry... Taking those in account, it can fly till 5800 km...

Both places are in india... We can even make it go to pakistan to spy..

Have you ever visited the Wikipedia page of SUPARCO. You will find negligible achievements of Pakistan in satellite launch, all satellites and rockets are "Made in China" "Launched in China" ;)

yes...INS usually gets preference on ballistic missiles as their path is a parabola and need to correct little deviations ...and has to hit large targets.
but in a precision guided bomb or a cruise missile which need accuracy of a few meters..and are too small for incorporation of dual navigation system.INS has to to be very accurate and preference is given to real time navigation ny satellites....which s gestationary satellite cant give...

INS needs much caliberation for accuracy....alk the land has to be surveyed for fluctuations in earths gravity and data processed and fed into the system...

no INS doesnt need any surveys its the TERCOM which needs survey. INS simply uses accelerometers, gyros and motion sensors. the only error in INS is the integration drift which can be rectified using satellite positioning.

Since India have satellites so may be the survey is done but It is not known. TERCOM along with INS known as TAINS give cruise missiles brilliant accuracy specially in hilly areas. Since Brahmos is the fastest cruise missiles it might be fitted with INS plus Satellight navigation for land targest only but Babur and Tom Hawk uses TAINS ( TERCOM + INS), so I am sure Pakistan has done it. But Pakistan is still dependent on GPS to rectify Integration Drift in INS on its missiles.

the gyroscopes used in INS are affected by gravity fluctuations and need to be applied correction for increased gravity of mountains and lower gravity of llanes and deserts as they have lesser mass accumulation than mountains..
If INS was that accurate..then satellite nav systems wouldnthave been built in the first place.

that's why I used the word TAINS. Which gives better accuracy over INS with support of satellite Navigation. The missiles always have an option to choose its inbuilt guidance.

Many people in India don't speak hindi, but speak a regional language. That doesn't make them angrez or german or swede. We have 22 national languages and 2 official languages. From his screen name, he probably speaks tamil.

The title of this thread is wrong and so is India's hallmark BANANA JOURNALISM.

GAGAN is not an indigenous satellite navigation system...its GPS signal enhancing system which has no own navigation capability..It completely relies on GPS / GLONASS for navigation signals..
This used to be called "differential gps"..
one or more ground stations are built and their position is calculated very accurately and stored in the system..
the ground station then compares the GPS position from GPS satlites and the Position stored..the stored position is known to be the correct pisition and any difference between the stored position and podition given by GPS satellite is calculated as error..
that error is then relayed to lther compatible receivers and they add or substract the error from their GPS pisition to get a pin point accurate position .
so thats just GPS augmentation not Indigenous navigation system...
the error signal can be relayed via ground baser radio transmitters or for more coverage...via satellite..and thats what india is doing...
i am not sure why india needs 7 satellites for this...or is there more to the system than just GPS error correction???
