I understand. This is the real change. People like Nawaz zardari etc can not win a direct election. But with indirect election even modi can become the prime minister of Pakistan. Only thing he needs is support of 150 MNAs. Is system main agar Quaid azam election laray to 1 seat bhi na jeetay.
There is the possibility that directly electing the President will invigorate the electorate in that they know their vote will count towards the election of the person running the government, rather than the current system of Parliament electing the Prime Minister. And if more people turn out to vote directly in the Presidential elections, you'll have a downstream impact of more people voting for the MNA's, MPA's etc.
The flip side is that Punjab alone has half the population of Pakistan, so expect some of the provincial nationalist parties to complain about a direct elect Presidential system favoring Punjab. The creation of a South Punjab province first might make this more acceptable to the smaller provinces.
Perhaps we even go to directly electing Senators instead of the current method.
