Sayyids in The Indian Sub-Continent

Thats exactly the reason why Sayyids chose marry daughters to other Sayyids other wise the "line stops" like you said as highlighted above, So what's the problem, I don't get it.

yeap you're right, It's called a 'Shajra' which is a recorded family tree, I have read mine, it traces back to Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani :D

I've met many fake Sayyids in my life, But Allah hu Aalim

In Punjab, Sayyids are strict about marriage with non-syeds. However, in Punjab Sayyids have many biradaris. One of the biggest are the Bukhari Sayyids, whose origin is in Bukhara and Uch Sharif in Bahawalpur. A sizeable number of the Bukhari Sayyids claim to be Shia Twelvers in Punjab.

Among the most famous Sayyids in Punjab there are many Sunni religious scholars of contemporary times, such as

1) Pir Mehr Ali Shah ( Shah in Punjab is a title many Sayyids use) RA
2) Shaykh Jama'at Ali Shah RA
3) Shaykh Ahmad Sa'eed Kazimi Amrohi RA
4) Shaykh Jalaluddin Shah of Bhikki Shareef in Mandi Bahauddin

Shaykh Jalaluddin Shah's son lives in the UK. He is by far among the most famous Pakistani Sunni scholars in Europe. His name is

Shaykh Irfan Shah Mashhadi

the dentist I used to go to in India was a syed, a gentleman. I had another friend's friend who was saeed, quite mild mannerd guy. Thats all I got to say on this topic. :girl_wacko:

The Sayyids are descendants of Hazrat Ali Karam Allah Wajhu R.A, the son-in-law of Hazrat Muhammad S.A.W by Fatima tuz Zahara, Hazrat Muhammad SAW's daughter; and those found in South Asia today are the representatives of the Sayyids who, during the Muslim supremacy, flocked to India as religious teachers, soldiers, and adventurers, from Turkey, Arabia, and central Asia.

Sayyids, found widespread in South Asia, are Sunni Muslims, but in northern Gujarat many are Shia Muslims at heart, though all profess to be Sunnis. The Shia Sayyids there form a distinct community, their chief bond of union being the secret celebration of Shia religious rites. As a class, Sayyids are by their profession obliged to show that they are Religious and are careful to observe all the rites enjoined by the Quran.

As a rule, a Sayyid's daughter marries only another Sayyid, preferably chosen from among some exclusive classes of Sayyids. Family trees are examined and every care taken that the accepted suitor is a Sayyid both on the father's and mother's side. But many take wives from any of the four chief Muslim classes and sometimes, though rarely, from among the higher of the local or "irregular" Muslim communities. Sayyid boys' names generally end in "Ali" or "Husain," and occasionally in "Shah."

Many of the Pathan tribes in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan, such as the Bangash of Kohat and the Mishwanis of the Hazara border, claim Sayyid origin. The apostles who completed the conversion of the Pathans to Islam were also called "Sayyids" if they came from the west, and "Sheikhs" if they came from the east; hence, doubtless, many Pathans falsely claim Sayyid origin. In Afghanistan the Sayyids control much of the commerce, as their holy character allows them to pass unharmed where other Pathans would be murdered.

The Sayyids had a short-lived dynasty in India, which reigned at Delhi during the first half of the fifteenth century. Their name again figures in Indian history at the breakup of the Mogul Empire, when two Sayyid brothers created and dethroned emperors at their will. In 1901 the total number of Sayyids in India was 1,339,734. This number included many well-known and influential families. The first Muslim appointed to the Council to India and the first appointed to the Privy Council were both Sayyids.

there is no such thing as Sayyid. Its Syed.

Buddy Sayyid was being used along side Syed in India. There are old documents of British Courts showing Sayyid being used.

Yeap definitely there is a diff bet Syed and Saeed but there is no difference in Sayyid and Syed, its like Hazrat Muhammad SAW's name, Some spell with a 'O' and some with a U after the first 'M' and 'A' or 'E' after the last 'M'

Buddy my relatives used Sayyid in 18th and 19th century. Are you going to tell me what my relatives' names were?
:sarcastic:

They used Sayyid but later changed spelling to Syed, both are interchangeable like Alvi and Alawi are interchangable.

Mistake is that Syed is not an English word. Its an arabic word and one can use Sayyid or Syed it will be written in arabic or urdu in the same say.

Sayyid ( can also be spelled Seyd", "Syed" "Saiyid" and "Seyyed) (pronounced [ˈsæjjɪd], or [ˈsæjjed], Arabic: سيد‎; meaning Mister) (plural Sadah Arabic: سادة‎, Sādah) is an honorific title, it denotes males accepted as descendants of the Islamic prophet Muhammad through his grandsons, Hasan ibn Ali and Husayn ibn Ali, sons of Muhammad's daughter Fatimah and his son-in-law Ali (Ali ibn Abi Talib).

Wkipedia is NOT a source. These are arabic names and wrong spells and pronunciation can change their entire meaning fully.

Syeds in pakhtun belt are most probably fake. Britishs who first came to this region observed that tricksters and fraud from hindostan come to pashtun country and introduce themeselves as syeds, gullible and superstious pakhtuns are tricked by it. English commisioner of bannu edward, 1852 writes that these frauds from hindostan have acquired as much as 10% of the highly fertile lands of bannu, they come up with claim that holy prophet came into his dream and ordered him to take possession of X.Y.Z land. The malak of village couldnt defy the supposed order of holy prophet.
Only one pashtun tribe claim to be syed. Mashwani of haripur, a very small tribe. Bangashs do not claim to be syed, they are karlanri pakhtuns like afridis, mehsuds and khattaks.
Pashtuns have habit of looking down upon their serfs/hamsaya. Syeds were not considered superior but not either inferior, they didnt want to offend progeny of hazrat muhammad p.b.u.h

No, they are NOT fake. You speak like a deobandi wahabi. The Sayyids among Pashtuns are mostly from Central Asia and Iran and Khorasan.

The Sayyids of KPK are 95% AhleSunnat, those who say Ya RasoolAllah!

You have to prove that they are fake. And it does not suit a Muslim to call a Sayyid a fake, because if someone claims to be Sayyid, then he/she must have proof of their lineage, and if they don't, then still they ought to be respected for their connection with the Prophet salat wa saam alaih and their case is left with Allah.
