In Hijaz most people are Sunnis of the Shafi'i fiqh (just like me and my family), there is also a strong Sufi tradition historically, in the Southern regions there are both Shia Ismailis and Zaydis, Sunnis of the Shafi'i fiqh, in the Northern regions /provinces you have Sunni Hanafis, in the Eastern Province you have Twelver Shias and Sunni Malikis etc. You basically have EVERY single sect of worth in KSA as most originated in our lands as the cradle of Islam so no surprise. We are quite a diverse bunch to put it mildly.

It's really not my problem that people are ignorant. The religious establishment might prefer the Hanbali fiqh (nothing wrong with that fiqh) so what? Does it stop me from turning into a Shia or Mu'tazila tomorrow if I wanted?

The point is that we are not here to dicuss whether it was a good or bad idea to remove some tombs/large mausoleums 80 years ago that were built mostly during the Ottomans and thus AFTER the Rashidun, Umayyad, Abbasid Caliphates and the Fatimid and Ayyubid dynasties. Thus far from being anything original let alone something done by previous Caliphates or dynasties.
