At 11.30pm, 10 nautical miles off Yemen’s western Red Sea coast, seven fishermen were near the end of the four hours it had taken to haul their nets bulging with the day’s catch into their fibreglass boat. Suddenly, away from the illumination of the vessel’s large spotlight, one of the men spotted a black silhouette coming towards them.
Moments later a helicopter began circling overhead. The fishermen were well within the 30 nautical mile boundary they had been warned not to cross by leaflets airdropped on land by the Saudi-led coalition. But, without warning, gunfire erupted from the helicopter.
Osam Mouafa grabbed his friend, Abdullah, dragging him into a corner, curling himself into a protective ball as bullets flew through the boat. Shot in both knees, with a third bullet having grazed his thigh, Osam began to feel water rising around him. “The boat became like a sieve,” he said, sitting next to the wooden stick he now needs to walk.
By the time the onslaught stopped, the captain – a father of eight – and Abdullah were dead. Another crew member, Hamdi, was deafened and paralysed down one side after being hit in the head by shrapnel. All bleeding heavily, the five survivors frantically began bailing water out of the sinking boat.

Yemeni air defense forces shot down a Saudi Typhoon fighter and warned Riyadh of 'more surprises' if it continues repeated aggression in the country.
Yemeni armed forces claimed to have shot down a Typhoon Royal Air Force (RAF) warplane in Saudi Arabia with the support of the Yemeni popular movement, Ansar Allah, often called the Houthis, in Nahm in the east of Sana'a (the capital of Yemen).
"We have the capacity to develop the Yemeni Air Defense and we are willing to [give] more surprises as long as the aggression continues," the Yemeni military chief, General Ibrahim al-Shami, said on Friday.
The general has also confirmed that Yemeni forces are changing their air strategy to counter Riyadh, which is why he has advised Saudi Arabia and its allies to "take these advances" seriously.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine, versatile, and highly maneuverable fighter, designed and built by the company Eurofighter GmbH. The RAF purchased about 72 Typhoon units to supplement its air superiority in Yemen.
The downing of the jet came after Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, stated that Saudi intervention in Yemen, which began in March 2015, will continue until Saudi Arabia suppresses Ansar Allah, which Saudi Arabia claims is funded by Iran and threatens the Gulf region.
"We will continue until we are sure that there will not be a new Hezbollah (Islamic Resistance Movement of Lebanon), because Yemen is more dangerous than Lebanon," said the crown prince who also serves as defense minister, recalling Yemen's proximity to the strait of Bab el-Mandeb, which makes the country a very strategic area.
Earlier this month, Yemeni forces intercepted a Saudi operated unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The U.S.-made General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper was hovering over Yemeni airspace when it was shot down by a surface-to-air missile. A Saudi F-15 fighter jet was also shot down over Sana’a in June.
