I would say a word or two about the Ottoman Empire and the so-called 'betrayal' by the Arabs:
Ottoman Empire would have collapsed--much like previous empires--including the British one in future--collapsed. And I have found Turks to be quite accepting of that collapse, even though they can be nostalgic for emotional reasons.
For Pakistanis here to defend that--only to stab Arabs--is also hypocritical: Why should a large number of people be subjected to an alien rule? And yes, put religion aside, it was an alien rule. We here cynically poo-pooh any Caliphate and then expect a few bedouin leaders to be accepting of the Caliphate.
That it lead to Israel was an unforeseen consequence. But how many people can say that the Ottomans would be around and strong in the mid 20th century? What would be the world like had there been no Hitler, no American/European 'guilt'?

We are going to speculate about these things till the cows come home. The reality is that, right now, forces outside of the region are benefiting from the internal divides in the Middle East. Those harping on the past are their willing-tools if they are contributing to the divides.

I'd say it is time for the region to act as one force, much like the EU does. And, as I see it, people in both Iran, Turkey and the Arab world are waking up to the new needs.

Then you haven't been following the news lately. Rigid Wahhabi clerics were the ones calling for outer of the government because they think it is too liberal. Ones calling to end the mixing of genders in hospitals by creating all women and all men hospitals now those guys are ******* in jail. Funny how the US and Iranian media keeps siding with those guys.

The biggest fear of the US is a saudi/iranian rapproachment.

It would remove the saudi need for protection from the US, and they can pursue an independent foreign policy.

The US would do anything to stop this.

Such a rapprochement even possible? It would be tactical at best - look lets be real, what we now have is two religious tyrannies each focused on their own version of the truth - the only difference between the two is that Iran is a historical civilizer, the other fundamental difference is where the "truth" they both seek to sell is focused - for the Iranian "the truth" is focused inwards towards the community of Muslims, for the other, their version of the truth is focused outward, it's a shotgun blast.

Until there is not some fundamental agreement as in 5 schools of law, not just 4 - I don't think there will be a solution we can live with either that or cleanse Arabia of what now is the predominant sect - a tough call

I am a liberal somewhat secular guy. And in like this government......this should tell everyone a bit of what I mean.
