Saudi Arabia’s Prevention of Blindness Union (PBU) has announced an initiative to help 10,000 people regain sight in Africa, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday.

PBU founder Prince Abdulaziz bin Ahmed bin Abdulaziz unveiled the initiative set the target of 10,000 people as a first-phase of the larger drive to restore eyesight among the blind.

The announcement came during Prince Abdulaziz’s speech at the opening of the First Gulf Forum for the Prevention of Blindness, Saudi’s news agency reported.

The Prevention of Blindness Union is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded through a partnership between Riyadh-based IMPACT-EMR, member of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), and AlBasar International Foundation, a non-governmental development organization, working for the prevention of blindness and controlling blinding diseases.

AlBasar International Foundation runs eye hospitals across Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sudan, Yemen, Nigeria, and Niger.

Great. Very happy about this great news. I am not a doctor but I wondered how come certain elders in KSA and the Arab world became blind at a young age? What caused that?
For example the current Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia Abdul-Aziz ibn Abdullah Aal ash-Shaikh is blind from a very small age if I remember correctly and before him Ibn Baaz was that and other clerics.
Was it river blindness that caused that? What was it?

Not surprising here, as far as I know most of those in the Gulf are sponsored and done by UAE and Kuwait.

Not to mention this guy alone who had done the work. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdul_Rahman_Al-Sumait

Thank you very much for mentioning the name of Abdul-Rahman al-Sumait. I forgot about him. What a wonderful Muslim, human being and role model he was. May he rest in peace.

A role model for many of us Arabs, Muslims, humans etc. worldwide today.

Eternal honor to the sheikh.
