THE SAUDIZATION OF PAKISTAN
How Pakistan is changing and what this means for South Asia and the world

Written by pervaiz hoodhboy, the lums professor?

Part of that makes some legitimate criticisms but otherwise it has very liberal overtones which even presents women covering their head as something bad. This guy does know that the Prophet's (pbuh) wives and the women of the sahaba all covered their heads etc...? It's like he's confused about the basics of Islam.

Please point out where exactly does this essay 'presents women covering their head as something bad' ?

"Barely twenty years ago, abaya was a word unfamiliar to speakers of Urdu and never to be seen. This shapeless gown, usually black, is of Arab origin...."

Statements like this one^^ are factually correct

Well one instance where he is trying to make it out as if girls wearing headscarves is something bad is shown below. It's quite clear that he would rather that girls didn't cover their heads.

He thinks girls wearing hijab is just something specific to saudi arabia whereas wearing the hijab is actually something compulsory by faith and occurs in all parts of the Muslim world.

He hasn't mentioned 'head scarf' or 'covering head' as being 'bad' even once.
He is talking about the Arab cultural import "Abaya/Burqa" and full body veils only (and that how such full body veils adversely affect habits and attitudes of female students in his opinion/experience as a teacher)

He uses the term "head gear" in that photo and he says hijab too (right at the end). It's quite clear he isn't only talking about niqabs/burqas.

Barely twenty years ago, abaya was a word unfamiliar to speakers of Urdu and never to be seen. This shapeless gown, usually black, is of Arab origin. But today, countless shops in every city of Pakistan specialize in abayas, hijabs, and burqas. Some are at the high-end, frequented by rich housewives and their daughters. Those in burqa sometimes also wear black socks and gloves, covering every inch of the body except for two slits around the eyes. This practice is made still unhealthier by the use of synthetic materials that make it difficult for the skin to breathe or sweat to evaporate. While some women are not allowed to step outside their house, others are veiled even inside their house because of hired male domestic help. Although doctors warn that Vitamin-D deficiency results in these cases, this has made little difference. Once upon a time, the fully veiled student was a rarity on Pakistani university and college campuses. But in colleges and universities across Pakistan, the female student is increasingly seeking the anonymity of the burqa. And in some parts of the country she seems to outnumber her sisters who still “dare” to show their faces. How does the veil affect habits and attitudes? There does not seem to be a proper comparative study. However, my personal observation is that many veiled female students have largely become silent notetakers, are increasingly timid and less inclined to ask questions or take part in discussions. They lack the confidence expected of a young university student.Mercifully, Pakistani men have not – at least as yet – taken to the tradition Arab dress of thawb, ghutrah, and agal.

Finally Pakistan people will learn Tawheed. After 1000years of becoming Muslims

It’s because of Ibn Saud that we have become infested with Khwarij extremism... across the world infact. The petro dollar has been a curse for the Muslim world

Most people who wear an abaya don't cover their face. Abaya by themselves are not even a headcovering, they're specifically the long dress type clothing, I'm pretty sure. But most women who wear an abaya do cover their head with a hijab.

One of his sentences is this:

"This shapeless gown, usually black, is of Arab origin. But today, countless shops in every city of Pakistan Saudization of Pakistan specialize in abayas, hijabs, and burqas."

So he includes hijabs alongside abayas and burqas.

Also there is nothing wrong with face covering, it too is a part of our faith. So even his attacks on the burqa are bad. Women who wear burqas or niqabs are perfectly fine.

He is very clear on what he is saying. It's there for everyone to see.

  • Covering face is not a part of our faith, it's not mandatory. It's a matter of choice and of course there is nothing wrong in a woman covering her face unless restricted by law.
  • Women covering their heads (regardless of what religion they were) had been a traditional South Asian practice since long.
  • Abaya is a recent Arab cultural import. It has nothing to do with Islam.

If there is nothing wrong with covering the face then what is Hoodbhoy's problem? Bro it is a part of faith, something not being obligatory does not mean it isn't a part of faith. For example, praying tarawih is not obligatory but we all know it is a part of Islam.

Well trousers and shirts are western exports, Hoodbhoy probably wears them all the time. Why is he complaining if people wear arab clothes?

Hoodbhoy has big problems with women covering their hair or their face, he seems to oppose both. That article you linked was him mostly getting his liberal views out. Stay away from people like him bro, they'll lead you to nowhere. People who attack Muslim women are normally some of the worst people in society.

Refinery ki zameen alot hogaiee? For the last 11yrs since Mushy uncle left KSA & UAE have been waiting for approvals and land.

Apana kaam kartay nahi ho, bus doosroon ko gali.......

Btw, I heard they were buying a refinery, not building one, but I'm open to correction.
The refinery that will be built will be in Pakistan..

We don't need more mosques. I would rather see KSA, UAE or other friendly countries to invest in schools, smart farming and poverty alleviation projects instead.
They are doing just that.. please follow the news..

Hi,

I worte to @Khafee years ago---if you don't show---people don't know---.

Average and poor People need to SEE THE HAND that takes care of them on this earth---. Even at Sheikh Zaid hospital---the emirates need to have personal posted at the hospital---and at every location---.

You just simply cannot give and then anticipate---be like the catholic church---. Be like other christian missionaries---.

When you build a project---make sure you are there every day ( your citizen ) and make sure people see you taking care of them---.
In Sunna.. when one gives, he should always hide the amount..but in some instances like mosques, hospitals, schools...etc..it is OK to display..

.
May Allah make this masjid a source which brings Pakistani nation out of superstitious ibadat. Towards true light and guidance. Ameen.
