It is not only dogs, it is extremely difficult to act against anything (except Muslims that are less than animals of-course) in India it seems, pigs, dogs, monkeys, cattles, rats, all sort of creatures seems to roam freely on the roads of India.

There is no prohibition of keeping dogs as pets in Islam. Only requirement is to get oneself properly cleaned up (usually take bath), and wear clean cloths before saying prayers. Since Muslims are encouraged to say certain types of prayers at home, they should avoid bringing dogs inside the house. My father has always kept dogs.

all of those but not cats... cats are almost extinct in india... the small ones mostly gone... the bigger ones ( leopard esp. ) being hunted down every few months...

i don't do prayers... never did... and dogs are haraam... reason being they carry diseases, kill cats, kill people, kill sheep... and hazrat muhammad was a great admirer of cats.

what i did do, some years ago... to make a point, i bought a air-rifle ( .22 caliber ) and would shoot at the dogs passing by in front of my house and at a distance from my house... did this for two months, i think... became quite good at sniper work... put great fear into dogs... the pellets didn't kill them... good only because i could have been jailed, even if that same dog had killed cats and attacked/killed people in that area.
