Construction workers defying the sweltering summer temperatures in Saudi Arabia will be given some relief as a ban on working during midday hours went into effect on Sunday.

The ban, that is to be enforced throughout the kingdom, was implemented by the Saudi Arabian Labor ministry last summer, and prohibits outdoor work between noon and 3 p.m. from July 1 until August 31.

However local daily Arab News reported that human right groups have complained that the ban is not being enforced everywhere.

“We have had many cases and complaints about companies forcing their employees to work in the sun during the banned hours,” said Mufleh al-Qahtani, president of the National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) to Arab News.

The complaints have prompted NSHR to file a petition with the Ministry of Labor and as a result the ministry has vowed to crack down on firms that do not enforce the ban this summer.

“This, year we will send out inspection teams to construction sites to enforce the ban and protect the kingdom’s outdoor workers,” said ministry spokesman Hattab al-Anizi.

In May 2012, fellow Gulf state Oman decided to also enforce a midday work ban as the temperatures soar in June, July and August.

The United Arab Emirates has been enforcing the ban for several years and companies this year face a fine of 15,000 dhs ($4,084) if they violate the rule.

Thousands of migrants workers are working the in the oil rich gulf region, many of them in the construction sector.

Temperatures in several areas are expected to reach 50 degrees Celsius in July.

In UAE they are implementing it since 8 years.

Qatar has also implemented the same.

Midday break rules now in force in the UAE

Emergency work can continue even during break with prior permission

The midday break is enforced countrywide by the Ministry of Labour from 12.30 to 3pm and runs from June 15 to September 15 this year. Stricter fines are now applicable for any violating companies. The fine this year has been increased to Dh15,000 for each violation and this is a Dh5,000 increase compared to the fines enforced per violation last year.

According to the ministry’s midday break ruling, outdoor work that is undertaken in shady areas provided with adequate means of artificial cooling can however continue between 12.30pm and 3pm, Other activities that cannot be stopped due to technical reasons, such as cement pouring, can also continue, but employers must ensure workers are given appropriate means of protection from the heat, as well as frequent breaks.

What the point , of fasting if you will be sleeping in your airconditioned room , for whole day only to wake up to smell of Samosa , and other goods , the point of fasting is you do your normal shiat you normally do in day just don`t eat and drink so you would appreciate what you have ..

I know guys who played full 90 minute soccer games in sun , 5 hours from sunset and did not drink a drop of water they did what they normally do in day just did not drink water

I would prefer a job where I don`t have to work just get paid

60 degrees Celsius? That is unbelievable!

I thought it was hot in Hong Kong, but we get nowhere close to those temperatures.

. .
60 degree celsius is an exaggerated figure. The highest ever recorded is 50 --i think.

50? lmao in Southern regions of Iran we can sometimes get temps above 50

60 in SA is believable.

btw, even 60 isn't that high compared to 71 degrees
Lut Desert

A NASA satellite recorded surface temperatures as high as 71 °C (159 °F), the hottest surface temperature recorded on Earth. There are reports that no living creature can survive for long in this region, with Lut generally considered an abiotic zone, being so forbidding that not even bacteria can live. Research groups took sterilized milk into the Lut desert, stored it uncovered in temperatures in excess of 71 °C (159 °F) in the shade and yet, the milk remained sterile."
