Indeed. The infrastructure in Israel and Saudi as well as the UAE are already there. A rail section needs to be built in Jordan to link it all together as well as work out how to run the ports at either end quickly.

This would actually help China’s BRI efforts; especially the port modernization) because China can steal the thunder of this announcement by signing a deal to modernize the Iraqi and Syrian railways and linking them to Turkey. A faster ALTERNATIVE route to the Riyadh/Jordan/Israel if you take into account the sea leg to Europe.

A route from Kuwait to Baghdad then across to Raqaa then Aleppo and up to Turkey and directing into the heart of Europe (bypassing Greece) via the Balkans would reach the markets of Europe, faster than bypassing Turkey by sea, especially if the end goal is Germany as in the picture.

This is something the Turks and Chinese should discuss with the Iraqis and Syrians as a counter to this new IMEC corridor.


P.S. If the GCC wants to not participate the Chinese can help build up the port in Basra to be the starting point, independently of the GCC.

2nd P.S. For Turkey, this would also make them more independent of Iran for Eastern rail based trade.

Well you are assuming this project is only there to allow Indian goods to be transported to Europe and vice versa. This project is there to allow trade between all member countries. From India to Europe of course a direct sea route is the cheapest option rather than sea, then rail, then sea. But what if France wants to send goods to UAE - then France to Israel via sea and then rail to UAE is the cheapest option rather than a direct sea route.

Also you haven't taken potential warehousing into account, many companies might set up warehouses midway in Saudi or UAE or Israel, so goods might be sent from Europe to warehouse or India to warehouse and then to the final destination as and when required. There are lots of possibilities...

East Asian countries are not part of this pact so won't be obligated to use this logistical nightmare. If they have an ounce of sensibility they'll continue using the Suez route with fee negotiated down or they'd just bypass the Saudi leg and directly to Israel and onto Europe.

Why would Egypt single out India with whom it has excellent relations. This is trade for the whole of middle east. Lowering transit fees is fine . We all benefit from it. That is the reason to have competition and countries will choose what suits them.

Saudi's are the MAIN DRIVERS behind this. They are the ones who first put their signature at the bottom of the agreements . They also know they are the prime beneficiaries.
East Asian countries are not part if this pact so won't be obligated to use this logistical nightmare.
The competition will decide what is cheaper better faster etc. Each will make their own judgements, there is no compulsion.

Doubt it would go through the West Bank, they wouldn’t want to deal with the political issues, probably come up from the south and up through “mainland Israel” to Haifa.

If China can get the GCC on board, they can pay off what ever tribes or groups that could threaten the project. For Syria and Iraq it would be their chance to get back into geo-strategic relevance. Also considering Turkey is being cut out of this corridor, they could work with their partners in Syria and Iraq to secure the corridor. If kept away from the Kurdish areas, it could be the basis for new mutually beneficial arrangement between Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. If the GCC is not on board, the Turks and these two Arab countries could pay off some of the groups and work with these two Arab countries to deal with those that don’t.

It’s new packaging and probably paving the way for recognition of Israel for some deal with the US for SA and the UAE.

Just states acting based on their national interests as new arrangements are being offered to them.

What we will have to see is if SA gets that article 5 level protection deal approved by the US senate.

The Hejaz railway never reached modern day UAE or anywhere near the Persian Gulf and it was a failure even for the few years it operated. The last train ran over 100 years ago.

Haifa port was recently handed over to Adani. This is long time in making. Adani is strategically placed to make it a reality.
