RIYADH: Saudi Arabia says it has deported ''more than a quarter million'' foreign migrant workers from the kingdom over the past three months.

The Interior Ministry said late Tuesday the foreigners had been residing in the country illegally and were in violation of labor laws. It didn't elaborate.

The deportations began after Nov 4 with a nationwide campaign targeting many of the kingdom's 9 million migrant laborers after years of lax law enforcement.

Many of those deported were Ethiopians accused of crossing into Saudi Arabia illegally through its southern border with Yemen.

Most foreign workers in the kingdom are from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia and the Philippines, as well as Egypt and Yemen.

Saudi authorities say booting out illegal foreign migrants will open more jobs for its own citizens.

Saudi Arabia or for that matter any country, has the right to deport migrants if they are living there illegally.

Illegal migrants are mostly people who were promised good jobs, salaries, these migrants pay alot of money to get to ksa and once they arrive the saudis take their passports, give them cheap labor jobs, force them to work in debt and then deport them.

Yeah, you are right, but isn't it the responsibility of their respective Governments to make sure that their citizens are not taken for a ride? Usually these poor souls fall into the traps of criminals who pose as recruiting agents & operate from their own countries & these recruiting agents who are in cahoots with the unscrupulous employers of the middle east send them to these countries giving half truths or maybe even total lies. The gulf countries won't be bothered naturally because it is not their citizens who are affected, so it is up to their respective countries to stop the rot. Blaming Saudi Arabia or other Gulf States is not the answer. They have the right to follow their laws as per their constitution.
