Haryana government's efforts to trace the origin of the mythical Saraswati river bore fruit on Tuesday when water started gushing out from a pit, which was being dug under the lost river revival plan.

As many as 80 people who were digging the course of the Saraswati in Mugalwali village of Yamunanagar district suddenly noticed that the soil they were shovelling out from a pit was moist. The dampness increased as they dug deeper and water started gushing out when they burrowed to a depth of eight feet.

"It was around 1 pm when Khalil Ahmed, Salma, Pradeep and Praveen Kumar were digging up a pit. A stream came out when it was dug up to 8 feet and the quantity of water increased as they went deeper," secretary of local panchayat Balkar Singh said. The water was also found in four other pits, which were being dug in a line. The news spread like wildfire and people thronged the village in large numbers. Yamunanagar Deputy Commissioner S.S. Phulia who along with Haryana Assembly Speaker Kanwar Pal Gurjar had launched the excavation work rushed to the spot. He tasted the water and then joined the people who have been digging the course of the dead river for the past 15 days. Work on Saraswati river project was launched on April 21.

The government believes that the lost river originates from Adi Badri area and flows through 41 villages in the Yamunanagar district. Excavation work has been started in eight villages for which Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has made budgetary provisions worth `50 crore.

A huge check dam, measuring 400 acres, has also been proposed on the Somb river that will be diverted to the Saraswati river. The mythical Saraswati river, according to the historians, had dried up 4,000 years ago. Satellite images had mapped its course that once flowed through North-Western India. Remote sensing experts had said that the river vanished after a powerful earthquake hit its course.

Traces of Saraswati river are found in the holy city of Kurukshetra. It is believed that the river once flowed through Thanesar, the capital of erstwhile Harshvardhan's kingdom, which is located close to Kurukshetra. Legend has it that the Saraswati once fed two wells known as Kapalmochan and Ranmochan in which the Pandavas had taken bath.

If revived, Saraswati may boost the state's religious tourism besides quenching the thirst of villages located on its course.

how can Sarasvati be revived in Haryana, what about its glacier, from which it originated, knowing that its course has been destroyed....

You will get water just about anywhere when you dig deep enough.

as far as I read about your river. It originates somewhere in uttarakhand near some temple badrinath

Nope...
"Verses in Rig Ved RV 6.61 indicate that the Sarasvati river originated in the hills or mountains (giri), where she "burst with her strong waves the ridges of the hills (giri)". It is a matter of interpretation whether this
refers only to the Himalayan foothills, where the present-day Sarasvati (Sarsuti)
river flows, or to higher mountains."

:-) yes it is....

according to henry-paul francfort...
"According to the course discovered, it seems river Saraswati originated from the Har-ki-Dun glacier in West Garhwal, Bandarpunch massif in the Himalayas, along with the river Yamuna. The two rivers flowed parallel for some distance and later joined, proceeding south as the Vedic Saraswati."

I thought Saraswati, Ganga and Yamuna met in Allahbad , what you call that place?

Wait so they hit some trapped underground water and magic they think they can revive a whole River.
The authenticity of the report is yet to be proved but an underground stream which is close to the surface(a river which went underground due to geological changes) can be made to surface by trenching along its route and augmenting it from an another stream. Some wannabe experts are too jingoistic.

Geologist finds merit in Yamunanagar admn’s ‘Saraswati found’ claim

The claims of the district authorities on the chance discovery of water from the now inactive Saraswati River got a boost on Wednesday after a geologist termed it as a remnant of an inactive river or stream channel, on the modern identified river route (technically referred to as paleo channel).

On Tuesday, during digging water current from nine spots was found near Muglawali village in the district.

On the basis of assumption and popular belief, the local administration had claimed it to be Saraswati river water.

After a field study of various spots near Adi Badri in the district on Wednesday, chairperson of the department of geology, Kurukshetra University, AR Chaudhri, said that presence of sweet water at the shallow surface was an interesting phenomenon.

“Contrary to initial assumptions, the water found at various spots firmly hints at the presence of a paleo channel. Initial study of water and sediments at these sites hints them being distinct from the locally available water and minerals,” Chaudhri told HT, adding that the paleo channel could be one of the streams of a major river flowing in the region in the ancient times. Chaudhri has taken sedimentary samples from the spot for further analysis.

He said the land revenue records prepared during British-era demarcates river course of the Saraswati and digging was being done on the same route.

“More digging on the identified old river course could lead to similar experiences of water at very low depth,” he said.

Following the CM’s decision to revive a project of creating a new water channel on the dry bed considered to be natural path of ancient river, the excavation work of ‘Saraswati Revival Project’ was started at Rullaheri village on April 21.

It is being dug under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNGEGS).

“It has also been confirmed that no other source of water crosses below the sites from where sweet water has come out. It indicates that an old water channel or river used to flow from here,” he said.

The geologist clarified that it was believed that Saraswati used to flow from upper Himalayas and enters the plains near Adi Badri, located in the foothills of lower Shivalik mountain ranges.

Chaudhri, who had worked with the Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) in 2006 to explore water possibility along ancient Saraswati river course, said that now there was no need for exploration for deeper aquifers.

“Under Project Saraswati, the ONGC in 2006 had successfully drilled India’s deepest fresh-water well at a depth of about 500 metre below the ground-level near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. Geologists had claimed that explorations could be started for similar possibilities in Haryana, which is facing a severe problem due to the excessive utilisation of underground water.”

Ahh Bangaldeshis, one of the lowest I.Q. people in this planet.Sometimes i feel embarrassed as a Bengali when Bangaldeshis introduce themselves as Bengalis. If only i could show the world the stark difference in terms of I.Q. between a real Bengali and a Bangaldeshi, after all we have always been miles ahead of you in terms of scientific and literary achievements:azn:!!
