S.F. mayor, US house speaker, exuberant crowd celebrate the city's first new subway for more than 40 years

San Francisco recently opened its first new subway in over 40 years, with three new underground stations and one above-ground station joining the Muni Metro T Third line.

The tunnel is about 1.7 miles (2.7 km) long, including 0.4 miles (0.64 km) of non-revenue tail tracks, and includes three subway stations; the surface tracks built as part of the project are 0.4 miles (0.64 km) long and include one surface station.

Ground was broken for the project on February 9, 2010, however, physical work did not begin until June 2012. The first phases of work included preparation of the tunnel boring machine launch site and headwalls for the Yerba Buena/Moscone Station.[23] At the time, the FTA grant had not been secured, and opponents were threatening lawsuits over potential disruption to traffic and businesses.
I see nothing worth all the top politicians getting together to celebrate, it's less than 3 kilometers long but took over a decade to build costing over 2 billion dollars. the stations look very crude and basic the platforms don't even have screen doors to protect the passangers.

10 years construction and 2 billion dollars for a crude, crappy less than 3 kilometer's city subway, this is how US generates its GDP.

Yes, this mean China's real GDP must be 100 times of US.
I mean US GDP is so artificially hyped up, to put it in perspective, every single year China puts over 1,000 kilometers new city subway in operation and the construction cost is just a fraction of that of US, and Chinese subways are far better built than those crude looking US subways.

It may not be much by Chinese high standards, but at least it is something. :D

So US GDP is just a number on paper. more than 2 billion dollars for less than 3 kilometers, are you kidding me...

more than 2 billion dollars for less than 3 kilometers, and some crappy subway like that? are you kidding me...

Well, what is the problem here? May be the accounting methods, costs of the land and construction overheads are different? Similar to a car that can cost variably in different countries, a direct comparison is not really valid.

Before I really doubted about these wild claims by US officials, now I fully believe it.
