S. Korea, Taiwan expected to top Japan in GDP per capita in 2027, 2028

And why not? You're making your own assumptions, and just because it doesn't makes sense to you make up some reasons on imports or whatever it is. The Lira has crashed. Taiwan, other than property prices in Taipei, has indeed very low price levels, which is due to a combination of weak currency and low wage levels.

Idk about Turkey, but general price levels (food, transport, healthcare etc) in Taiwan indeed looks half of the US's. Of course, wage levels in Taiwan also look less than half of the US's.

OK. If what you say is true then prices between economies with similar PPP to nominal ratios should be the same.

For example Taiwan should be similar to Ghana. But that's not true.

China's PPP multiplier is lower than Taiwan's. That means prices in China must be higher than in Taiwan. They're not. Prices in China are lower than in Taiwan yet they have higher PPP multiplier.

You are also not a subject matter expert in economics unless you state your credentials or show outstanding economic understanding, and so far you don't. Are you a professor of economics? Are you paid to be an economic analyst? If not, why should your words matter more than anyone else's?

You admit you have no explanation for this discrepency. I'm merely positing a hypothesis for this discrepency, I never asserted that my idea was fact.

Lmao, so sensitive. It looks like I need a PhD on economics to post on PDF nowadays.

. .
I said it many times in PDF. Japan has declined, but South Korea is underestimated. But many people here don't believe it.

. .
you can post all you want but nobody is forced to accept your posts as 100% gospel truth. We're allowed to question your narrative.

You're entitled to your own opinion, and I've never said otherwise.

Japan still has a stranglehold on many Cold War era industrial technologies like gas turbines which South Korea still cannot produce.

this does not change what I said. Japan still controls many Cold War era technologies but might not be so good at new ones. I don't know enough to make a 100% judgment.

The most important thing is the gap between people. Japan's new generation has fallen and has no competitive spirit like the Koreans. The Japanese are now more like Europeans than East Asians.

Numbeo is self-imputed and it isn't that accurate, partially also because of weightage. One look and I can tell the figures are not reflective of the general populace in SG. Eg; The average Singaporean dine in at hawker centers which the average meal cost only SGD3~4, instead of SGD13. The average cost of property per sqm is only around SGD3K~6K, not SGD13K~25K.

I know it is measuring 2017 but China is definitely well ahead in both supercomputing and quantum computing at the moment.

Supercomputing, China has for at least last two years have had the world's only exascale supercomputers and China built two using two separate principles and Chinese suppliers.

Quantum computing lead is constantly swapping, with US now adopting China's method of using photons too and delivering soon a machine that is better than current Chinese one which is leading. Again I believe there are two principles being used by Chinese side while US only recently also started using photonic method as well.

I guess in 2017 it can be said US is ahead.

I'm very surprised that regenerative medicine places China ahead of US. I think it should be other way around? Bioscience in general, China is well behind US and even a few other European players like UK and France. China isn't far behind the top 3 and mostly focused on agricultural side rather than human side.

Autonomous driving back in 2017 should be USA lead but now it's roughly equal. China has 20 players for USA's 3 or so major suppliers and developers and neither side has definitive lead in this either. China has far greater and deeper implementation of it though in no small part thanks to 5G networks for certain autonomous vehicles like delivery cars, small buses, and things like street cleaning trucks, which are just for "driving" on roads. If we include farming and construction machinery as part of this, then China leads by far in terms of implementation since 5G networks rolled out in China by 2018.

Battery China leads even more now than in 2017. Not only controlling the supply of processed materials based on Lithium and raw earth elements but China developed and holds all the technology at the moment for batteries - sodium based, LFP, blade, and conventional ones (CATL dominating even over Panasonic and LG Chem).

Drones is weird one again with USA that should equal first especially back in 2017. China may have higher volume and value of sales of commercial drones which I think is what this is measuring but behind military ones, they are roughly equal and technology too but US does not have the communication and guidance technology used by WZ-7 and WZ-8. D-21 is like a pentium 3 compared to a Sunway SW26010P. They both made from similar principles and seem to perform similar task but the American one needs to drop its film and crashes somewhere while the Chinese one beams guidance targeting information to hypersonic vehicles and MaRV warheads in real time and is reusable. Also D-21 is mach 3 limit and loses energy while WZ-8 gets around mach 5 and is rocket powered.

so you admit that PPP estimates can be faulty because weights are arbitrarily assigned and it is possible to make unrealistic expectations about where people actually spend their money, especially for people who don't understand the local situation. they can dramatically overestimate or underestimate costs.

Obviously. GDP is an imperfect measure in the first place. GDP per capita is usually adjusted for PPP, and I'm simply pointing out that Taiwan and SK already has higher GDP PPP per capita than Japan. But you guys are jumping on me at anything positive for Taiwan lolol.

when is GDP per capita "usually" adjusted for PPP? I've never seen it adjusted for PPP when it comes to China.
