I do believe that S-400 is no way unbeatable. But the circumstances under wich it would be beatable will be very costly for the attacking force. Moreover any system when pushed beyond a certain threshold will fail. This is applicable for both of us.

Give the above I think people around here think highly of decoys. I think I will post a thread about this and S-400.

Dude we ain't dueling out here. Its called a discussion. And we are discussing with what we have got and what we are planning to get. Neither of both nations are even considered for the export of MALD-J or even the basic MALD system. If we (Both the countries) ever try to emulate MALD, we will do exactly what was the founding stone of the project, namely expendable target drones. And let's be realistic out here, none of us have the tech to produce huge arsenel of turbojet drones (atleast without a massive help from any third country) with Signal Augmentation System to replicate our frontline fighters.

Please remember that till now no single large scale air conflict was won by IAD alone. They are nothing but a small cog in big scheam of things. IAD will hurt the birds.But They are in place to stop piecemeal attacks, but they can do little in case of large scale invasion. IADs are deployed not just to declare a specific area arround it as "No Fly Zone", it also has defensive aspect to it. The assumption by certain members around here that any system that is not capable of stopping absolutely all targets in every conceivable attack is absolutely useless. The biggest advantage of these IAD (and for the matter of fact ABM, however limited) is the ability to deal with small attacks, the " Accidental Launch" scenario. It also reduces the "Use-it-or-lose-it" defensive philosophy and leaves attacker to face the potential of embarrassing prospect that the defender may thumb his nose at him after the air assets have been shot down, and then call him (the attacker) before world court for the attempt.

PS: The idea that IAD has to be neutralized before the actual war begins over own airspace is the testament to the lethality of the system. Every single offensive system used to neutralize IAD is one less system to harm innocent life.

US Air Force to spend $118 million on decoy planes to confuse enemy defenses

The US Air Force just offered Raytheon $118 million for a contract to provide Lot 9 Miniature Air Launched Decoy Jammers (MALD-J) to support their aircraft, UPI reports

MALD-Js launch from aircraft like a missile, but instead of striking a target, they duplicate the flight profiles and the radar signatures of the aircraft that launched them, thusly acting as a decoy.

With the MALD-Js, a fighter jet can send out a decoy as it approaches a protected airspace. When enemy air defenses fire on the decoy, they reveal their position and deplete their ammunition, which is often costly. Many of today's best air defense systems, like Russia's S-400, are road-mobile, and therefore hard to find.

The MALD-Js, which weigh just 300 pounds and have a range of 500 nautical miles, can theoretically force these missile batteries to reveal themselves to the real combat aircraft that lag behind.

Even better than most decoy systems, these can also have jamming capabilities, to further cripple enemy air defense systems.

HQ-19 has nothing to do with S-400, China would not receive the S-400 until at least 2017
S-400 SAM can target aircraft, cruise missiles, and tactical and medium-range ballistic missiles.

A simple math: How much this S-400 system costs? Training, support systems, deployment and maintaince costs?

How much simple unguided rocket systems costs? How much training is required?

Excluding artillery long range effects, what is the cost benefit ratio for the Indians to deploy the strategic assets in ubber hostile enviromnets. Is it possible that defending forces would have already war gamed scenarios of asmysteric defence and denial strategies.

IMHO there is no rational logic in deployment of this system anywhere near 400km zone. Might be intended for strategic defence of seat of government and other strategic assets deep within India from Pak BM and CM missiles.

Hopefully, war never happens in this region. Only way India will ever break out of South Asian box is by creating permanent peace with Pakistan. It will require rational decision. However, IMHO, in the current situation stability is not going to happen in the next ten years. It is sad.

These systems meant to defend stategic installations and assets inside the country,not the wide population, against wide range of threats.
