Good names for ships. I like the T-series of Indian navy. 10 ships are good punch.

But Guys why MoD and IN are not giving direct orders to these private shipyards. Why they are dependent on Russian to get the orders for Frigates.
Although warships will be built in India with ToT and with improvements also, this is good for India. But MoD and Indian Navy should give these private shipyards more orders along with L&T. They should give some orders for submarines also to these private shipyards.

Actually India ordered Talwar class destroyer to be build in Russian shipyard just like Indian Navy fleet tankers being built at Italian shipyard. Now its Russia's decision if they want to outsource a project. I think it would save Russia some money and Indian govt. will be happy as it will help in developing our private shipyard.

Since the destroyers will be made in Indian shipyard and Russians won't come to make them. Hence there would be TOT.Apart from this with Russia in the deal we cam assume TOT.

I think there is a confusion. IN will have only 7 Talwar class destroyers. If its 10 Talwar class destroyers then its a very big deal.

Talwar class is not a destroyer it Frigate. Talwar class guided missile frigates, also known as the Type 1135.6, are modified Krivak III class frigates from Russia

So, these frigates will be built in Pipavav with Rissian assistance or Russian's will get the tender and built it here?, either way how it is financially viable is something I fail to understand.

I can understand the repair and maintanance of Russian subs and Ships there but not the building of ships. Or may be they will be built here and the Russians will help Pipavav the way they helped in Arihant I guess....

I think its like India ordered 4 frigates from Russia so Russian government decided that it will give license to build these ships back in India by an Indian shipyard rather than in Russia like the previous six.

It has nothing to do with indian navys procurement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually these ships are for India. They have checked many shipyards and found Pipavav suitable.

You are right. And Russians are doing this because it would be cheap building these ships in India and since Indian govt. is trying for indigenous development, Russians will get benefit and these are the reason why DCNS tied up with Garden shipyard.

Problem with defense is that you cannot trust the private firms, there main purpose is too gain profit. Actually its good, but in defense you cannot rely completely. Look at US, if US govt. didn't had so much control on their defense private firms there would F22 or F35 competing in MMRCA project.

Actually Government of India is Negotiating with the Russians regarding this deal , negotiations began early this yr when Putin paid the visit
It was also reported in the Russian Media , however contract will only be signed after the acceptence of all the ships of second batch of Talwar class ie by 2012

Earlier reports had peged the number at 3 ships in the follow on order
but now it seems that it has increased to 4

During the induction of the first Shivalik class Frigate , Indian Navy chief Admiral Suresh Mehta said that the navy will Induct 16 Stealth Frigates In the next 10 yrs , My guess is 9 of them will be Indegenous ships of P17 A , P 17 B CLASS , while remaining 7 will be foreign out of which 3 Talwar class Frigates are already under going pre delivery trials with the last of the batch getting ready to be launched in a few weeks

My guess is that the remaining 4 ships would also be Russian
Coz only the Russians produce quality ships within the Indian budget apart from Indian domestic shipyards and the chinese shipyards , and india is unlikely to buy from china

we have signed a protocol with the Russian Government agency which is responsible for the defence cooperation with India and this protocol allows the construction of 4 stealth frigates for Indian Navy . The Russian Government agencies have built 3 stealth frigates already for the Navy and they are building another 3 at the Russian yard.

Read the link before calling others 'blind'. Might save you from some embarassment.

Now, a slap of facts.

Pipavav Shipyard Ltd has informed BSE that the Company has signed Protocol with M/s. Rosoboron Export which is a Russian Government arm for Defence co-operation with foreign Governments.

This Protocol is for four additional numbers of Stealth Frigate under Russian collaboration at the yard of the Company. The Russians have delivered 3 Stealth Frigates for India and balance 4 are under construction at Russian Yard. This Protocol will help the Company to develop state of art technology to build frontline warships on a cost effective time bound basis. The Company is the first private sector Shipyard in India post Independence to be approved for building of Warships. The Russian counterpart have signed this Protocol after being fully convinced about the capacity and capabilities of Pipavav Shipyard to build stealth frigates under their technology and supervision. The Protocol also covers the Mid-Life updates, dry docking, repairs and modernization of submarines of Russian origin in Use by the Indian navy.

This could be a great boon to the Indian navy as they in future have a dependable Indian yard for critical maintenance and preparedness for any emergencies. The cost and forex savings would be tremendous in addition to the strategic advantage.
