"The outgoing year has been significant for a large number of our helicopter programs. The upgraded Mi-28N has made its first flight. Innovative technologies and solutions implemented in the design of that helicopter, not only just improved its characteristics, but also made Mi-28NM an almost perfect combat vehicle," Mikheyev wrote in his New Year message in the holding's journal Russian Helicopters.

The Mi-28NM also boasts onboard gear that controls its speed, as well as the drift and altitude angles. This means that the rotorcraft cannot be thrown off course even if is its navigation system fails.

The Mi-28NM also carries a brand-new 360-degree radar and advanced fire control system that ensures faster target acquisition and enables the use of precision–guided weapons. The rotor blades are made from composite materials that guarantee a safe landing even if hit by a 30 mm shell. The cockpit is fully armored and protects the crew against armor-piercing bullets and projectiles with a caliber up to 20 mm. The Mi-28NM made its maiden flight in October 2016.

The newest incarnation of Russia's Tu-160 supersonic variable-sweep wing heavy strategic bomber/missile carrier, one of Moscow's most formidable weapons, is expected to have double the functionality of its current version.

In November 2015, the world's fastest bombers with Kh-555 and Kh-101 cruise missiles.

A year later, Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov announced the Russian Aerospace Forces will acquire around 50 upgraded Tu-160M2 planes. The M2 designation indicates that this is the latest version of Russia's largest, heaviest and fastest bomber, which Tupolev dubbed the 'White Swan' and NATO knows as 'Blackjack'.

The KRET design bureau has been tasked with developing new equipment for the Tu-160M2, which will incorporate integrated modular avionics and computing systems without the use of elements imported from abroad. The complex electronic hardware is expected to be ready by 2020 — three years before the production of the new plane is slated to commence.

Electronic warfare deserves special mention as it is an indispensable element of today's military aviation. The Tu-160M2 will brandish the same new electronic warfare system that is used in the T-50 PAK FA fifth-generation jets.

KRET claims that the system ranks among the most advanced in the world and can shield the Tu-160M2 from all types of surface-to-air missiles. In addition to that, the aircraft will carry a platformless inertial navigation system which will determine the coordinates, route and speed using laser gyroscopes and quartz accelerometers.

It's noteworthy that this device can function effectively, even in conditions where an enemy applies its electronic warfare system.

If needs dictate, the White Swan's crew will be able to determine their position the old fashioned way, by taking readings of stars via an astro-correction system.

Engineers believe that the Tu-160M2's effectiveness will be more than double that of its predecessor.

The Tu-160 is designed to engage targets around the globe with nuclear and conventional weapons.

Russia plans to produce one dozen Il-114 turbo-prop aircraft each year

January 26, 18:03 UTC+3
The Il-114 turbo-prop aircraft is scheduled to be put into operation in 2018

MOSCOW, January 25. /TASS/. The United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) plans to produce 12 Ilyushin Il-114 aircraft each year, UAC’s CEO Yury Slyusar said on Thursday.

"Here, at the MiG corporation premises in Lukhovitsy, we have been gearing up for the production of the Il-114 regional turbo-prop aircraft. Funds have already been earmarked, the construction bureau has begun preparations to hand the documentation over to the plant. Here, in this very workshop where the MiG-35 planes are built, we will also produce twelve Il-114 aircraft in a year," he reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting of the defense industry commission.

"This will allow us to achieve our strategic targets for increasing the production of civil aircraft by 45% by 2025," Slyusar added.

The Il-114 turbo-prop aircraft is scheduled to be put into operation in 2018. It will be used as a medical, reconnaissance, patrol and anti-submarine aircraft.

Il-114 is a family of aircraft designed in the 1980s by the Ilyushin design bureau. Nearly 20 aircraft were made in Uzbekistan in the Soviet times.

Now, the planes are planned to be built at the Sokol factory in the city of Nizhny Novgorod. In the next several years, around 50 bln rubles (roughly $827 mln) will be allocated for this project, Russian Minister of Trade and Industry Denis Manturov said. According to him, deliveries of the aircraft is due to begin in 2019.
