Or at least custom varients of foreign engines, which is why I prefered the way Sweden had gone for the Gripen with the RM12. We still focus far too much on the idea, that every nut an bolt need to be India, while that simply is not possible with our current level of technical and industrial capability. That's why a indigenized foreign engine that fulfills all the performance requirements we need, with a high ammount of indigenous parts, is better than an indigenous engine, that is below the needs.
I still hope that we go for a indigenized Type 30 engine for FGFA, just as we should keep trying to make Kaveri capable enough to be fitted to the Mig 29Ks, since an indigenized Mig 29K with Kaveri engine, is far more worth than for the industry and the navy, than a limited platform like N-LCA with a US engine.
Sweden got that kind of a deal because it is a US ally from the 'coalition of the willing'.
We won't even get the remotest help on that from GE or P&W.
Also, Gripen cannot be exported to every country that Sweden wants. It has to take US permission.
