Russia To Help Pakistan Build N-power Plants

The Russian Federation and Peoples Republic of China have decided to bail out Pakistan from the constraints, relating to establishing the new nuclear power plants, for meeting the country’s pressing energy needs.

TheNation has learnt reliably from diplomatic sources that Moscow and Beijing have decided to offer its cooperation to Islamabad in setting up new nuclear power plants to meet Pakistan’s growing energy needs. The sources also said that Russia-China offer contains the conditions that the nuclear power plants, offered to Pakistan, should be set up under the supervision and in collaboration with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The offer, the sources said, would help Pakistan seek technical cooperation from the world’s nuclear supplier groups on the pattern of Indo-US cooperation that gave New Delhi freedom to seek help from international nuclear suppliers in the recent past.

Thats a good news. What is the PK govts stand on this? Are they planning to setup any more nuke plants in near future, as PK already have a great potentials in hydro electricity.
To get the IAEA clearance may take little time may be a year or two to get the formalities done.

Indeed, nuke plants are the way forward. Hydro, solar, wind and other alternatives will be pursued, but nuke plants will surely have more priority.

Afaik, all nuclear reactors are fission reactors by default. Fusion reactors are not yet a reality on any scale.

Or did you mean fast breeder reactors ?

^^ Spot on! We got to put our differences aside and focus on the future. Pakistan and Russia have a lot in common since the Cold War finished. What happened in the past is regrettable, however, the world moves on. Both share mutual regional interests. The Russians have shown goodwill lately and the RD-93 is one good example. The Russians are clearly giving signals and Pakistan must grab the golden opportunity with both hands. Alliances are being forged for new world orders. Our region has a pivotal role to play in this regard. We have China, Iran, Russia, Pakistan on one side and the US, India etc. on the other.

Russians seems to be in a "helping" mode They are offering Bangladesh N-power plant also.Good for Pakistan that they are making more contacts with Russia,it will help them on arms procurement as well.

pakistan should start lookin into formin more strategic relationships. we missed our chance during musharraf era when russian president himself came to pakistan for the first time i guess and we didnt give much protocol. it seems as if we still havent missed the bus. thanks to our geographical location.

With all due respect sir, that is incorrect, the Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov came to visit Pakistan in April of 2007 and had received high level protocol given to valued friends. The strategic talks began when President Musharraf and President Vladmir Putin met in 2003 at the Kremlin.(Pakistan woos Russia)

This visit in 2007 was to bolster and affirm the relations between Russia and Pakistan. It is worthy to note President Musharraf and China's efforts that generated some level of goodwill in Russia for Pakistan.

I cant believe russia will help us in that matter. But its also believable especially since america is helping India with their nuclear technology.

I do hope we can end the decades of (understandable) mis-trust.

I think China can play a role to influence more cooperation between Moscow and Islamabad. It is obvious that Obama administration is 'warming up' to india as a counter to China (and Russia is upset).

At the same rate, we also need to protect our own interests. We should maintain contact and commerce with Americans, but militarily we should focus more on China, Turkey and Russia.

as indians are extremely well-versed on SU and Migs, i doubt Pakistan would look at Air Force. Same way --i doubt indian will want to acquire block 60s that were offered to them.

Look at Turkey. They used to be SWORN enemies to Russia. But now look at their cooperation, Turkey is buying gunships and other goods from Russians --despite the fact that they operate one of the largest fleets of F-solas.





p.s. my post is very ideal thinking. I think if we worked more with the Russians, Americans would suddenly try 'enticing' us back (as they are good at doing) ---offer us E-3 Sentrys, F16 packages, Apaches, radars etc.
