Russia to build nuclear aircraft carrier by 2023

Russia will complete construction of its first nuclear powered aircraft carrier by 2023, the head of Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation said on Thursday.

“We will start designing the Russian aircraft carrier in 2016, so that by 2018 we can start construction,” company head Roman Trotsenko said.

He also said that as the construction period was likely to be five years, the carrier would be put into service in 2023.

The Russian navy has one conventionally powered aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, construction of which began during the Soviet era and finished in the early 1990s.

President Dmitry Medvedev said in 2008 that Russia would build new carriers for the navy but did not specify how they would be powered.

Considering the state of Russian ship building and high tech manufacturing. I doubt they can pulll it off in the stated time frame.

i agree. but they will try desperately to have nuclear powered carrier within time frame mentioned

Considering they had to buy an LPD from the French.. you may be right..
Less to do with infrastructure thought.. probably has to do more with design and expertize.
Last I heard was that most Russian ship designers had left for greener pastures after 91.. and not to many came to replace them.

Why they have to wait for 2016 to start designing a nuclear aircraft carrier?

i think they bought the LPD's because of the technology, cause i think they have the knowledge to make LPD's them self!

Yeah they bought it with some technology transfer to go along with it.

What state would that be? Currently Russia is constructing Lada, Yasen, and the Borey class submarines as well as Gorshkov class frigates, Ivan Gren class ships, and Steregushchy class corvettes. The only problem that Russia has with building an aircraft carrier is finding a port, Russia has proposed building one in Ukraine since Ukraine has ports large enough to construct carriers, if that does not work the other option is building or modifying a port in Russia.

As for high tech manufacturing, your statement is vague, if Russia was incompetent in this field than surely the international space station would not trust Russian technology nor would the US use Russian rocket engines, nor would Russia have the ability or capacity to complete various project that include everything from new generation engines to radars. Even old mission computers for the SU-30 can perform ten billion operations per second. Electronics can also be purchased from abroad, this not only includes microprocessors but full systems.

As for the time frame, 2023 is disappointing, the design phase won't start for another 5 years and it will take another five years to construct the carrier, not to mention the design phase will last 2 years. They can complete the carrier well before 2023--2018 if the design phase started today but for whatever reason the design won't be proposed until 2016 and that is bureaucracy.

Better to be EMALS and 3rd generation nuclear reactor. Otherwise, even the Nimitz class will be obsolete compared to the Ford class in that time frame.

For what purpose is needed aircraft carrier?

1) The defense of their coasts.
2) Attack.
3) Control of sea lanes.
4) show the flag.

Why do I need an aircraft carrier in Russia?

1) The defense of their coasts.
Look carefully at the map of Russia. Russia has a vast maritime borders. However, the devil is in the details.

a) Black and Baltic Sea are a death trap for large ships. World War II proved it.

b) The Arctic Ocean is almost not usable aircraft carrier fleet.

1. Ice.
2. Low temperatures.
3. In the area of the Gulf Stream mostly bad weather (fog and rain).
Any carrier, trapped in these narrow circumstances. Turns from hunter to prey.

c) In the Pacific Ocean. The fleet of the enemy can attack the island and the coast.

1. Limited timeframe (summer season).
2. For similar reasons, the enemy will not be able to gain a foothold on the coast.

The most important thing. Russia has no large cities on the coast. The main population of Russia lives a thousand miles from the ocean. Closed area of some seas, I considered above.

2) Attack.
At one Russian attack by carrier-based aircraft?
All Russian potential enemies are nearby, with its land borders. The only exception is the United States. U.S. has the largest fleet in the world. A couple of new Russian aircraft carriers will change the situation? More than a century passed confrontation between Russia and England (called the fighting an elephant with a whale). Russia could not compete with England on the sea. England could not compete with Russia on the ground. After the Second World War changed the United States to England. The situation remained the same. Russia is a continental power. Britain and the U.S. are essentially island states.

3) Control of sea lanes.
Russia is virtually independent of sea transport.

4) show the flag. Plans to upgrade 3-4 (according to different sources), Project 1144 cruiser "Orlan". This is the most powerful cruiser in the world. Having nuclear power plant and conceding only by its size carriers. That will be quite enough.
The priority for the Russian Navy in the near future are the types of ships - a corvette, frigate, destroyer, nuclear and diesel-electric submarines. The new aircraft carrier in a given situation is a luxury.

But there is a big + in the construction of a new aircraft carrier.
This will lead to the collaboration of many companies to upgrade equipment and to prepare new professionals and to develop new technologies. PAK-FA T-50 aircraft and "Bulava" in missile designed to perform the same task.

China is getting a carrier...And now Russia wants a carrier.

I think the US is losing its status fast. maybe the rest of the world doesn't have equipment as advanced as the US but the entire world is catching up sort to speak even small countries want to develop their own fighters etc...

I think the time of wars for land is coming back.

This doesnt seem like the smartest idea, carriers are for power projection and Russia has very little power left to project. What are they gonna do? Pressure land locked, former iron curtain, nations with an aircraft carrier in the Arctic Ocean? Russia seems to be trying to preserve its military glories from the days of the Soviet Union, but the reality is, there is very little use for any of this equipment. The Russians dont have hostile relations with any major military power so Im not sure what they plan to do with an aircraft carrier.

Nuclear propulsion for surface combatants is more a fetish than a necessity.
The principle is as follows. I could have a nuclear ship, and you're jealous.

In the nuclear power plant has only one + (this independence of fuel supply).

There is also a lot of minuses.
1. Price.
2. Recycling.
3. Security.

Besides the usual accidents (caused by structural or personnel) add combat damage. Even in the case of minimal damage.
1. The reactor is a great danger to the crew.
2. The reactor will be immediately stopped. It may not stop the radiation effects of the ship. However, stopping the reactor in combat is fatal effect.

By escort still need supplies.

Possible electromagnetic catapults?

I do not want to argue. However, please do not compare China with Russia. China has a lot to work to catch up with Russia to develop military technology. China has some successes. However, what will China and Russia in 10-20 years, we do not know.
Will China ever really compete with Russia in military technology? I doubt it.
Do not talk about opportunities in Russia. You know nothing about them.
