You don´t realize simple facts. Nobody gives a shit about Goddard, because Wernher von Braun made the triumphant results. Wenher put the things into the sky. Thats what matters. Hard metal.
And in America intellect is shackled by capital. I'd rather be working for the government than for a rich thick freak-capitalist.But their intellect were shackled by the government. A lot of good those free edukashun were, eh ?

Endless possibilities were in the Soviet Union. In those days, the scientists of the West were jealous to scientist of USSR. In the West, the scientist went with an outstretched hand, in search of sponsors, the Soviet state payed all expenses. This is not true, @vostok . While there are many academic institutions n the United States; private as well as public colleges and universities. The cost of education varies depending on what school you decide to go to, but there are many ways / forms of financing education.
American college students working on their Bachelors degree can avail of the Pell Grant, which pays up to $5,000 to undergraduate students. This does not take into consideration the US Federal Aid for undergrads and grad students , which is based on income and not on credit rating. In addition to this, there are also Parent Plus Loans, wherein the parents or guardians of students can cosign with the student to a certain loan amount that may be used to cover the cost of education.
Students of high academic abilities may also be eligible for scholarship that may cover part or the whole cost of the education. There are plenty of processes wherein which American students can avail of financial support to help them acquire their undergraduate education and graduate education. The opportunities here is endless, actually.
I work in Academia and have professional links to an American university in the United States, so I have personal and professional understanding of these systems available to many students. In fact, American students can also avail of what is called "Work Study" aid.
When I was speak with my Russian friend(he is in opposition block against Putin).
He said once.
"Every morning I hope that Russia will lose every drop of its oil,our economy will collapse, and we would be in knockdown for decades, but after that Russian gift for innovation will show its potential to the world,it is simply combination of Russian ingenuity and Russian struggle for existance."

However, this brought some negative - the lessening of competition. But this problem was solved by creating multiple competing institutions.

Oldy, capitalism - is a dead-end of progress.Governments cannot create wealth. It can only directs them.
Am willing to bet that you were borned after the ignoble and spectacular collapse of the Soviet Union. Either that, or you were too young to understand what life was like under communism, which is your sentiment. I played tourist in East Germany when it existed, kid. What a dump it was compared to West Germany.
Can the simple microwave oven came from your Soviet Russia ? Not likely. Not because Russian scientists are not brilliant enough. Indeed many of them are. But precisely because capitalism was not allowed that something as helpful as the microwave oven cannot come from your Russia.
Capitalism frees the mind, child.
Werny got famous because of WW II. If not for that, Goddard would have gotten much further than von Braun. For all we know, von Braun would be working for Goddard.
Goddard died and von Braun took his place. Simple as that. By the time the US got von Braun working, he was more of an administrator than a working engineer. True, von Braun had vision, focused, knew how to drive people, and was a good salesman for his program, but it was not as if he was on the design floor poring over every schematics, nuts, and bolts.
Wrong. The solution is provided by capitalism -- rewards. People are naturally selfish. Offer a reward and there will be competitors regardless of how many institutions are there.Endless possibilities were in the Soviet Union. Capitalism created more innovations than any system to date.Oldy, capitalism - is a dead-end of progress.
Then what the hell do YOU know about the Soviet Union for you to say how great it was ?And yet - whenever you imagine yourself that you know something about the Soviet Union, you have to remind yourself that you do know nothing about the Soviet Union.
Nothing to do with the false belief that the American space program came from the Germans. What shocks me most is that if von Braun would have had it his way with the Space Shuttle program, the challenger and columbia desaster would not have happened. Von Braun hated Solid Rocket Boosters. He said they are too dangerous and uncontroleable. The orbiter design was mostly from von Braun but he was an absolute enym of the SRB and external Tank system. He planned to place the Shuttle on a Saturn V stage. Politicians called this too costly and went for the cheaper system. Thats the problem when politicians **** into things they have no clue about. That was also when von Braun left NASA
His original plan was this:
