VLADIVOSTOK, March 31. /TASS/. Russia's S-300 surface-to-air missile systems hit a simulated enemy's ground air defense objects during drills in eastern Siberia's Republic of Buryatia, a spokesman for the Eastern Military District told TASS Friday.

The launches were conducted as part of large-scale exercises at the Telemba training ground.

"Crews of the S-300 missile systems performed rocket strikes at ground air defense objects of a simulated enemy," the head of the Eastern Military District’s press service, Col. Alexander Gordeyev, said.

As part of the exercises, Buk missile systems and the latest Tor-M2U air defense missile systems hit small high-speed targets that simulated drones, while about 20 simulated aircraft were downed by the Strela-10 short-range air defense missile system, the Igla man-portable infrared homing surface-to-air missile and the Shilka self-propelled, radar guided anti-aircraft weapon.

"The district’s aviation and air defense grouping continues its combat duty and is ready for any changes in the air situation," Gordeyev said.

NEW S-400 MISSILES ABLE TO DESTROY TARGETS IN NEAR-THE-EARTH SPACE AT LONG DISTANCES AND AT HIGH SPEED - RUSSIAN AEROSPACE FORCES DEPUTY COMMANDER

The crews of S-300 and S-400 air defense systems shot down cruise missiles launched by an imaginary enemy during an air defense drill held in Russia’s eastern Buryatia republic, Rossiiskaya Gazeta wrote, citing the Eastern Ministry District press service.
The cruise missiles were fired by Tu-95MS strategic bombers covered by an escort of Su-30SM fighter jets.

“On the closing day of the exercise, the operators of S-400 and S-300PS air defense systems successfully repelled an attack with multiple cruise missiles,” the EMD press service said in a statement.

A number of ballistic and aerodynamic decoys were also deployed in the imitation attack and were taken out by the crews of S-400, S-300PS and Pantsir-S anti-missile and anti-aircraft systems, the statement added.

The S-400 Triumf is Russia's next-generation air defense system, capable of carrying four different types of missiles able to destroy aerial targets at short, medium, long and very-long ranges between 40 and 400 km.

The weapon is designed to be able to track and destroy all enemy air objects, including airplanes, helicopters, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles flying at speeds of up to 4,800 m per second; they are also capable of targeting ground objectives.

Designed by the Almaz/Antei Air Defense Concern, and built by the Fakel Machine-Building Design Bureau, the S-400 were introduced into the Russian military in 2007.

As of 2016, Russia had received 39 divisions, or 312 launchers.

Strangely enough, the drill in Buryatia coincided with Thursday night’s launch by the United States of 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Syrian military airfield in Ash Sha’irat, located about 40 kilometers from the city of Homs.

MOSCOW, May 3. /TASS/. An instrument engineering research institute in Novosibirsk has created a new radar for monitoring air and outer space, the institute’s CEO, Pavel Zabolotny, told a TASS news conference.

"We are conducting research into products meant for the Defense Ministry, such as air and space defense radars of the future," he said. "An experimental sample of such a radar has been made and tested. The testing was successful," Zabolotny said.

He added that the research center would be developing modern sensors for both civilian and defense industries.

"Regrettably, it is sensors used in military products that have gone outdated. The special materials still being used are outdated, too, and the manufacturing know-hows have been lost," Zabolotny said, adding that his research center and the Russian Academy of Sciences would pool efforts to develop new generation sensors.

This is a no easy task and it will require many years to accomplish, but the first results may become available already in the first year of work.

The Novosibirsk instrument engineering institute is an affiliate of the concern Almaz-Antey. It participated in the development of a self-propelled radar for detecting S-300 and S-400 air defense systems and target detection and setting systems for Buk missile launchers.

MOSCOW, May 24. /TASS/. The Russian Armed Forces received 40 precision weapon carriers and 180 long-range cruise missiles in 2016, which helped increase their non-nuclear long-range capabilities by a third, Russia’s Defense Minister Army General Sergey Shoigu said on Wednesday.

"In the past year alone, units and formations received 40 precision weapon carriers and 180 long-range cruise missiles. This helped increase the Armed Forces’ capabilities for striking enemy targets by a third," Shoigu said in the upper house of Russia’s parliament.

Russia’s long-range ground-based, sea-and airborne non-nuclear containment weapons are arriving for troops at an accelerated pace, he said.

As a whole, Russia’s nuclear triad is 60% furnished with modern armaments, the defense minister said.

S-400 missile systems
Thirteen air defense regiments in the Russian Armed Forces have been armed with the most advanced S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile systems:

"The number of air defense missile regiments armed with the S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile systems has been brought up to 13," Shoigu has noted.

For the first time in Russia’s newest history, a continuous radar field of the missile attack warning system has been created along the country’s perimeter to cover all the strategic aerospace directions and all types of ballistic missile flight trajectories, the defense minister said.

"The share of modern types of armament in the Aerospace Force has reached 66%," the defense minister said.

Yars systems for Russia's strategic nuclear forces
About 20 missile regiments in the Russian ground-based strategic nuclear forces will be rearmed with Yars intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) systems:

"By 2021, the ground-based strategic nuclear forces will have 17 missile regiments rearmed with Yars systems. Advanced strategic missile systems being developed now will start arriving for the troops," Shoigu said.

These measures, along with the delivery of nuclear-powered submarines to the Navy, will help bring the share of modern weaponry in the strategic nuclear forces to 72%, which will enable Russia to maintain its nuclear containment potential at the required level, the defense minister said.
