Russia calls to speed up India and Pakistan joining SCO

In an effort to add some muscle to the regional economic bloc, Russia is looking to expedite India and Pakistan's membership process into the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

*Acting Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said delaying the decision on the accession of India and Pakistan was "counter-productive." He made his comments while taking part in a meeting of foreign ministers of SCO member states in Beijing on Friday.

"We should take an active part in all international discussions on Afghanistan, coordinating our positions and stressing the SCO's readiness to contribute to efforts by the international community aimed at the political and economic revival of Afghanistan," Lavrov said.

The SCO, which was officially established in 2001, includes Russia, China, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan presently have observer status, while Afghanistan and Turkmenistan attend SCO meetings as guest nations.
Lavrov said that an international conference on Afghanistan will take place in the Afghan capital of Kabul on June 14.

The acting minister stressed that granting SCO observer status to Afghanistan would help achieve these goals.

China has held the organization's rotating presidency since August 1, 2011.

No I do not see how this article is stating that India is sucking up to Americans at all. SCO seems to be inviting both Pakistan and India. It will very interesting to see if India will join.

China wanted to deny India a full membership in SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization). Russia does not want to oppose China in this decision. On the other hand India has more weight in BRICS because the presence of Brazil and South Africa in the grouping. Kazakhstan, China, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are the six members of the SCO. India and Pakistan are given the observer status. Afghanistan wants to join SCO as an observer.

USA Is The Common Enemy For Russia And China

China wants Pakistan to play an active role in SCO but does not want India to do so. China considers India as a rival. Russia has no serious objection to China’s line of thinking. Russia and China are more concerned about US and its military power now than about India. China and Russia realize that it is dangerous to allow USA dictates its terms to the world in this unipolar world. Russia and China are engaging in defence cooperation and their common enemy is USA. Russia and China in unison take stand in many matters challenging USA.

China Is An Aggressor

This kind of cooperation between China and Russia with the sole intention of challenging USA does not benefit India in any way. China is an aggressor as far as India is concerned. China has claims over Arunachal Pradesh which is a part of India. China may attack India any time. India cannot Russia in such a case and has to depend on USA to rescue it from a military defeat. Earlier in the sixties, USA helped India but Russia kept silent. Otherwise entire India would have fallen into the hands of China.

Secure Supply To The US Soldiers In Afghanistan

India sees no point in any big gain by joining SCO. Pakistan has gains in the form of increased military and nuclear cooperation forthcoming from China. The SCO is eleven years old now. USA finds it useful to seek the support of the SCO in solving its Afghanistan problem. Americans are increasingly targeted by the terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan. USA will find it profitable to shift its supply line through the Central Asian nations to the northern side of Afghanistan. SCO may help USA to achieve this security.

Xingjian Is A Dangerous Route

USA is also considering sourcing its supply in Afghanistan through China. This could be done through Xinjiang. India has no say in all these matters and is not concerned also. As Afghanistan is an Islamic country, the predominantly Hindu State of India has no appeal to the Afghans and its leaders. Supplying materials through Xingjian is a dangerous proposition for USA. Pakistan and Afghan terrorists are already coordinating to bomb several places in Xinjiang.

China May Not Like India’s Influence In Central Asia

Through SCO, it is possible for India to gain a foothold among the Central Asian countries. But China may not like this happening. India can gain a foothold in the Central Asian nations only through bilateral engagement. A regional forum like the SCO with China and Russia as the heavyweights will not help India in this arduous task.

China Is Camouflaging Its True Intentions

China camouflages its true intentions in sweet words. China is really opposed to India gaining prominence in any grouping or forum. China is opposed to India’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council. China is an untrustworthy nation. China may welcome India but its intentions are not friendly towards India. China is opposed to India’s growth. China does not want India to play a lead role in the international affairs. In the past China had attacked India and captured a sizeable section of its land. Therefore India should be careful with China. Membership in BRICS is a welcome proposition for India but it is not so in SCO.

I think that it could cause a problem because Russia China Pakistan see America as a threat even other potential members like Iran would be anti American so India joining would have benefits but that would have to be weighed against it playing proxy for Nato and America

First China will push for Iran to enter SCO. Then Russia will nominate Syria to enter and China will nominate Pakistan to enter. Nobody will care about india after that!
