The US has to walk the talk. The US only supports a country if it is invaded. If Japan invades South Kurils then the US cannot support Japan.

Then hopefully cool heads prevail and Japan will not invade South Kurils. A good compromise is Russia and Japan divide the South Kurils into roughly two halves, with Russia keeping the northern half consisting of Iturup and return the southern half consisting of Kunashir, Shikotan, Habomai to Japan. Russia move the people of the southern half to repopulate war torn Donba region.
