Russia Becomes World’s Leading Wheat Exporter

Man US, India and China all use almost same amount of Land, just because they are much larger, almost 3 times bigger nation makes there percentage small. Just check the total area of those countries compared to India and you will know. 50% area under cultivation is remarkable considering we got 1.25 Billion people.
Yes we are blessed with one of the best climate and all types of soils for different typesof food production. Also India has 10% of the world's freshwater supply. Although agriculture also puts stress on fresh water resources. India uses more water than any other country in the world which is not a good thing as it cannot sustain this for long. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_freshwater_withdrawal

Can you reply with more facts? Though we are not as good in manufacturing we are barely so far behind in Agri sector. 1/3 is far too much. I would like to know more if you have some more details.

Size has not much to do with production, in 10 years how come there no almost no improvement is beyond my understanding, size cant be issue. Slower growth can be a problem after saturation but your market is yet to start how come you reached saturation state?

That thing you said about unhealthy quality of wheat is not true, a mere excuse used by anyone who told you so. Nobody produces health hazards in farms and the since they are exported its impossible that they are lower quality

Russia has become the world’s leader in the export of wheat, surpassing the United States and Canada, Russian Minister of Agriculture Alexander Tkachev said Thursday.

“Russia supplies about 25 million tons of wheat on the external market by the end of the agricultural 2016 year. We became the world’s leading wheat exporter, surpassing the United States and Canada,” Tkachev was quoted as saying by Russian news agency TASS.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Russia last year achieved record levels in the harvest of corn (13.2 million tons), rice (1.1 million tons), soybeans (2.7 million tons) and buckwheat (900,000 tons). The total grain harvest amounted to 104.8 million tons.

Well hard work dont always bring good fruits smart work does.

Is there any subsidy program by Russian govt. on Fertilizers and Seeds or something else? and how is it not challenged in WTO after recent changes and Bali Package? India and other developing countries were given exemption but how come Russia provide massive support when its against WTO norms? Does Russia comes under developing economies?

@vostok you have any more details about wheat production? I am interested to look the area under cultivation and yield per hectare.

India's area under cultivation fall sharply last year but production jumped 6 Million tons so yield increased significantly but a lot of crop was destroyed due to untimely rains and people ran away from Wheat due to previous year drought and this year production, specially in UP, around the major wheat production areas.

One thing that amaze me is that in previous 10 years, Russia become top exporter from Importer, India increased its production almost the total production of Pakistan but strangely, strangely you are stuck with that same number for 10 years!!!! its so tiring and frustrating.

The yield of grain crops by region, quintal / hectare.
About WTO - I do not know. There are few farmers support programs in Russia. Both for large producers and family farms. There is also a special bank https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosselkhozbank that lends to farmers. As well as preferential conditions from agricultural machinery producers.

Excellent productivity from Russia.

Nations in the Southern Hemisphere though, are going to run into water problems very soon. And large amounts of water are essential to agricultural production.

China has already been working on massive river diversion projects for decades now.

India too got priority sector lending in every bank beside 2 banks and regional banks for farmers. I was asking more about subsidy, do Russian govt. provide subsidy in seeds and fertilizers or interest rates? The wiki link provide no info about it.

Its in Russian mate, I cant understand properly seems like 25 Quintal at max in some areas and average is around 20-25 Quintal. This is not very high as Indian yield is around 30 Quintal/hectare average, seems like you have increased the area for wheat cultivation to achieve it. Still good work mate.

Mate can you also tell about wheat yield of China per hectare for comparison purpose? Most of the info over Internet is scattered, outdated and due to language barriers hard to find. Also if you can mention any specific steps taken by Chinese govt. for agriculture promotion (monetary measures mostly).

There >25 not 25 at max.
With regard to subsidies - they are in any country. All countries subsidize farmers, including France and Germany.
It must be remembered that much of the fertile lands of the Russian Empire and Soviet Union remained outside the modern Russia - Kazakhstan, Ukraine.

I am not against subsidy mate, I was just asking if you know any specifics about it in Russia since you are Russian.
