People like to be associated with the religion of powerful, it's normal. Budhhism flourished when rulers patronized it, Islam did when rulers were Muslim, same as Hinduism. all of them have reached equilibrium in India.

Equality and all worked well homogeneous population of Arab, in South Asia there will always be Ashraf and their less noble South Asian peers.

Marauding looters like sher shah or nadir shah(iranian) never settled they came looted,killed people... also do remember islam cam long before these invaders... there were muslims long before mughals or invadinf afghans...
