Farming is just a venture like any other. It should be given as much support as any other.
Agriculture in India should be modernized, made scientific and the cultural set up should become progressive which will remove the socio-economic situations that lead to farmer suicides.
The headings that will bring this about are :
1. Vertical Farming ( VF ). Agriculture done in enclosed buildings that are say max five storeys high. This brings two sub-headings :
a. Hydroponics. Plants ( say wheat ) grown in tubs of water that is mixed with nutrients.
b. Full spectrum lighting. To simulate sunlight. I believe blue LED lighting stimulates better plant growth.
Both items should be computer-controlled of course. Example, the point at which a sensor says that the nutrient liquid has become "stale". Imagine if you gather the populations of ten villages in current rural India and build a new township where there are five VFs in every neighborhood. Imagine if these townships were to be rid of their current rural lifestyle and instead be introduced to city lifestyle ( like shopping malls ). Imagine India with many of such new townships. India will have great food security and a better lifestyle.
2. General Urban Farming ( UF ). This will be for the plants and trees that cannot be grown in buildings. Like coconut trees. Here too computer control should be used for say the telling the 'drip irrigation' subsystem when to release the water
3. Collective Farming. Farmers trained in the above scientific, modern agriculture and doing farming collectively by a group of equals.
4. Doing the above will utilize space, water, electricity, nutrients and manpower efficiently.
5. Zero tolerance on dowry and zero tolerance on weddings that are attended by more than five people including the bride and groom, two witnesses and the notary, with of course the wedding done at a court. This will remove one element from the farmer suicide phenomenon where some farmers may have jewelry but will not sell them to repay the micro-credit loan because they want to marry off their daughter in the 3000-year-old Indian style wedding. This heading can be extended to other unnecessary cultural festivities / elements.
Market dynamics should decide and not vote bank politics. Modi is fixing it however.
Capitalism should not be tolerated. It is Capitalism that has led to farmer suicides in India and even in USA.
