What's new

Rs 80,000 crore worth defence projects cleared, 6 submarines to be built in India

Not at the moment, the U216 and the recenct Barracuda class concept are larger and newly designed subs, which will include both capabilities.

Not necessarily. The Make in India policy is aimed on foreign vendors teaming up with Indian counterparts, which means L&T teams up with a certain vendor and only if their sub wins, L&T will be the Indian manufacturer.

All the rumors about vessels with nuclear propulsions are not worth anything yet, since even Arihant is in prototype and testing stage yet. Until that propulsion and the systems are proven, we won't use it in other applications. Besides that, SSNs will have their own rols and would not reduce the need of SSKs, so even if we would go for SSNs based on Scorpene, it would be done in a combined deal with more Scorpene SSKs.

IF they are meant to produce additional Scorpenes yes, because no matter how good they are, they have to absorb the technology first to build it, which takes time. Mazogon already has absorbed it and would need less time to build additional once.
After three years of operation, Arihant reactor would be matured. Isnt it? And maybe BARC able to bring the output of 100-110 MW from some minor changes in Arihant reactor design.

From that it may be possible Scorpene hull can be used in creating new SSN class for IN.

. . .
Three years in testing not operational service.

Even in three years, they have enough data that reactor is sea worthy or not?

Ok, then this is also the similar case with INS Aridhmaan then, it means they going to install a reactor which is not tested truly.

.
more the Indian products from govt. instituitions , lesser the chance of corruption by politicians and babu logs:-)

.
It means 8,000 dead tanks of enemy in case of war. India must buy atleast 30,000 of them. That will wipe out atleast 70,000 to 90,000 enemy army men if there is two or 3 in the single tank.

.
So is the Arihant just a tech demonstrator then?

No it will be in operational service when it's fully matured, but it's the first of it's type for India and systems like the propulsion as well as ballistic missiles needs tp mature and improve.

Sea worthy for sure, but diverting it directly to different applications before it's fully tested is too risky. It's not a normal diesel engine we are talking about, better to take it slow than to risk too much.

But bro, we going to use that same reactor in S-3,S-4 and S-5. Isnt that risky much?

Which will take time to produce and in the meantime the propulsion and the systems mature, just as all necessary systems around it, but the follow SSBNs and SSNs will be based on Arihant and it's systems.

For the Arihant program (Advanced Technology Vessel/ATV) four hulls will be build. Two are done while the third & fourth
are under different stages of construction.

The first hull, S-1, is a tech demonstrator which permanently remains in harbour and plays as a testbed for various technologies, including the reactor to some extent. Arihant is the S-2 hull. Aridhaman is the S-3. The third one will be S-4, the last of the Arihant-class submarines. The 3 operational submarines of this class will be carrying the K-4 IRBM with 3,500km reach
(tested from pontoon earlier this year out to 2,000km) and a 1 ton payload.

The S-5, S-6 and S-7 will be a much larger SSBN class with a 190-200MWe reactor and a claimed displacement of 15,000-20,000 tons. Not known for sure how many silos it will have - a minimum of 12 is for certain. These will carry the K-5 ICBM with 6,500km reach and 2 ton payload with MIRVs.

^^ A concept of the S-5, looks a lot like the Delta-IV doesn't it?

As per PSen, a version of the same 190-200MWe PWR of the S-5 SSBNs will also go onboard the IAC-2. While an advanced version (more compact, not necessarily more powerful) of the present 83MWe reactor will be used for the planned fleet of SSNs - 6 contemplated so far with the possibility of further orders taking it above 9 boats. These will have around 5,000 tons of displacement.

The same Vizag-based SBC that built Arihants will handle the S-5 class while the SSNs will have a new line somewhere else, possibly under a private company.

How about this one..?

Would be great, but it's a concept so far and mainly aimed on countering HDWs U216 concept. The subs in our competition included the earlier gen of subs (U214 and Scorpene) and if the government has just again only implemented the privat industry clause into the competition, the contenders might not change.

Is this a joke or you have lost your mind ?

Well... This concept is certainly a great one. And i dont think any Sub. was named in this new RFI. So we may very well see a competition between 216 and this one. Afterall $1.5 Bill is too much for a Scorpene or, 214 sized sub..

.
These 8,000 are only for special forces units. The regular infantry will still purchase 37,000+ Javelins to replace the
Milan-2 and Milan-2T.

Is this a joke or you have lost your mind ?

...says the Hashish-fueled ISIS aficionado who plans to take over the world.
