Burma communal riots prompt more curfews
The government called for an end to "religious extremism"
Curfews have been imposed on three more Burmese towns as attacks on Muslim communities spread closer to Rangoon.

Mosques and other Muslim buildings have been attacked by crowds of Buddhists in towns on the road from Rangoon to Pyay, about 200km (125 miles) to the north.

The US has warned its citizens to avoid travel to parts of Burma due to the violence, which began a week ago.

A state of emergency is in force in the central town of Meiktila, where some 40 deaths have been reported.

Soldiers clearing debris from buildings torched by angry mobs retrieved eight more bodies in the town, the New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported on Tuesday.

In Bago region to the north of Rangoon, state television said Muslim religious buildings, shops and houses had been damaged.

Residents outside the capital said they did not feel safe.

"The situation is better than the previous day but we can't sleep well at night," one man, a Buddhist, told Reuters. "People are still afraid of buildings being set on fire because there isn't security everywhere."

A Muslim man said: "We are safe during the day, but we cannot go back to our houses because security personnel are only on the main roads. But there has been no more attacking and destroying houses. There are just thieves who steal from burnt buildings."

In a statement on Monday, the US embassy in Rangoon advised US citizens "to avoid travel to the Mandalay region because of escalating violence in that area".

Reports of other attacks on mosques and houses were reported on Monday in towns near Meiktila - Oh the Kone, Tatkone and Yamenthin.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the violence. Details of any casualties in these areas were also unclear.

Trouble broke out after a reported argument at a gold shop in Meiktila in Mandalay region last Wednesday.

At least 12,000 Muslims are thought to have fled their homes in the unrest since then.

The conflict is the worst since violence in Rakhine state last year, where nearly 200 people were killed and tens of thousands forced from their homes.

The conflict that erupted in Rakhine involved Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims, who are not recognised as Burmese citizens. Scores of Rohingyas have fled what they say is persecution in Burma in recent months.

Who threatened those extreme budhists. Muslims and budhists used to live peacefully on that regions hundreds of years.

not sure.. there may have been calls by muslims for separate homeland, but i am not sure.

.
because they can only be peaceful to a point that they are not threatened.
You obviously dont know anything you talk about now. Do you? Rohingya muslim are being subjected to one of the most cruel and systematic genocide of all times. There are still mosques all over Burma suggesting rohingya's had their settlements throughout the country. And now they are just about 1 million left in the Rakhaine province. You dont have to be a genius to figure out what happened.

You are "not sure" of anything yet you implied in post #3 radical muslims made peaceful monks go violent. Did you not?
One thing I never understood is you Indians will always defend people who persecute muslims. I have seen here in PDF you guys defend Israel like hell and now you are arguing on behalf of the burmese. And you also happen to be the one who preaches "secularism" to Bangladeshis everyday. Better you learn the meaning of secularism first you might be surprised by what it actually means.:cheesy:

The atrocities of the Burmese will continue till the BD govt takes a strong stand. When Sheikh or Zia were in power the Burmese used to behave. But Hasina has outsourced her Foreign and Defense affairs to Delhi. Dipu Moni and Gauhar Rizvi of Walton Initiative connection, are Delhi's appointees.

Its always wise to open ones mouth as much as its naturally possible, and not make hypothetical assumptions. Read up on what is happening there, and no one thus far had made any separate homeland demands. It started from an argument from a jewelry shop and the rest is all history.

According to some people when a muslim fights back then he is a terrorist but when buddhist attack then it is labeled as self defense. Double standards all around.

People say same thing for rapid decline of Hindus in Bangladesh. Hope you can apply your logic and intellect there too.

Do you want me to quote statistics ?

And why Bangladesh is not giving refuge to Rohingyan Muslims ? Don't Bangladeshis care about these Muslims ?

1. So you implying we also did a state managed massacre of the hindus over the years. huh? Now such a incident wont go unnoticed in the media. So give me some credible proof of this genocide you are talking about.
2. No need to post your media's cooked up statistics. We know what they are worth.
3. There are already over a million Rohingya's in Bangladesh and everyday more are pouring in. We just cant open the border as then the Burmese government might even start to send the Kachin, karen and all other minorities they regularly persecute.
