Well done team USA, you lead the world in sporting success.

Here is my tribute to Team USA and it's a song I grew up with and love. Yes I was, and still am a Hulkamaniac.

True, when it comes to sports(like in many other fields) there is hardly any country that can match the U.S.

So you were a Hogan fan as well huh??

The good old days. :D

What's shocking for me in this olympics is that In-terms of regions, South Asia failed to win a single gold! That is really sad, for a sub-continent with a population over 1.7 BILLION, that pretty demoralizing.:tsk: Compare that to Africa which won 31 medals including 8 golds. :cheesy: So S.Asia and Middle East are at the bottom in this regard despite their huge populations. Strange indeed.

I'm sure according to some sour members here, it's because we evil anglo Saxons are favouring Africans with some sports disciplines compared to Asians.
There was rumor that Sri Lankan team had more officials than athletes.

Yes the good old days, I could go on The Ultimate Warrior, The Heart Foundation, Rick Rude, Mr Perfect etc.

As for South Asia they honestly don't give a toss about other sports, and the main reason is bloody cricket. That game has a lot to answer for. Every decent athlete gets thrown into it, I mean the Pakistani team had men over 6ft 4, and why the hell would you get them to play cricket? Send them into wrestling, boxing etc. Pakistan, India and Bangladesh are obsessed with it, and just don't give other sports a chance. Now couple that with no funding what so ever, and you have the situation you described i.e. not a single gold. Pathetic. Even the funding excuse is a grey area, I mean how much funding do you need for some wrestling mats, which can also translate into Judo? How much do you need for a simple ring and boxing gloves? What about weights, the initial cost is only the plates and bars and that's it! Yes you need coaches but I'm sure they could spare some of the budget for that. For crying out loud there are poor and retired Cuban athletes who would do a fantastic job if you paid them decently.

Well to be fair you can't win if you don't play. I think 55 countries won gold medals this year. Most of the teams were small so you can't expect a boatload of medals.

However China doesn't have a good excuse.

Top Countries:
Country / 2012 gold medals / 2016 gold medals / diff

US / 46 / 46 / 0
UK / 29 / 27 / -2
China / 38 / 26 / -12
Russia / 22 / 19 / -3
Germany / 11 / 17 / +6
Japan / 7 / 12 / +5
France / 11 / 10 / -1
South Korea / 13 / 9 / -4
Italy / 8 / 8 / 0
Australia / 8 / 8 / 0
Netherlands / 6 / 8 / +2
Hungary / 8 / 8 / 0
Brazil / 3 / 7 / +4
Spain / 3 / 7 / +4

Is there any prize money for those who won medals ?

Gold medalists will receive $25,000, silver medalists get $15,000, and bronze winners earn $10,000. These earnings are all taxed heavily.

The medals themselves are also taxed. This is in accordance with the value of the metal used to make the medal, so Gold is taxed the highest and Bronze the lowest.

Many US Olympic athletes don't opt for the monetary reward because it's so heavily taxed that you're taking chump change home at the end of the day.

Outside of the US the top fifteen nations in accordance to monetary reward for Olympic winners is this:
