Dhaka : Rights activists at a rally on Friday urged the government to take the Tipaimukh dam issue to the UN international court to prevent India from going ahead with the controversial project.(UNB)
They said the Tipaimukh dam project will be another "death trap for Bangladesh like Farakka barrage" and spell environmental disaster for 50 million (five crore) people in the Meghna River Basin.
Citizen Rights Movement and Initiatives for Peace (IFP) jointly organised the rally in front of National Press Club in the city this (Friday) morning.
Chaired by Citizen Rights Movement president Major (retd) M Mafidul Haque Sarkar, the rally was addressed, among others, by water expert M Enamul Haque, Citizen Rights Movement general secretary Tusar Rehman, Jasim Katabi of Green Belt Trust and IFP secretary general Ifma Hossain.
The speakers said the government should build a strong movement in the country, involving all political parties and members of civil society against the Indian move.
They also suggested the government to conduct long march to Tipaimukh with a view to building a national unity and place the issue in regional and international forums. The rights activists alleged that the ministries of Foreign Affairs and Water Resources have failed to deal with the Tipaimukh dam issue in time.
An 11-point demand was put forward from the rally. The demands include immediate cancellation of the Tipaimukh Dam project agreement, sending all documents of the project to Bangladesh, making Bangladesh-India Joint River Commission effective, and resolving the Tipaimukh issue through discussion.
