Revived: plan to give access to bases to US

If you have answered all these questions correctly, you will see that everyone of you have originally blown the “logistics support agreement” into some sort of NATO like alliance.

@US_statedept_retired

Do you see this as a part of the "Pivot to Asia" strategic design?
If yes then what role does this play in the strategy?

To contain China obviously. In the event of a naval conflict in SCS, American ships can use Indian ports to refuel and rearm, same as Indian ships can refuel and rearm in Diego Garcia, Guam, etc. We can also use each others fleet tankers to refuel and rearm.

As I said, it wasn't what I read but what a few others suggested. Thank you for the heads up which was of no use.

Well I educated you so it was of some use...unless you decided not to learn the lesson :p

We should sign this agreement, it will give us greater access to US tech/comms.

Lol..You really don't have an idea of how a discussion in a forum - especially one like this - works do you? Well here's a tidbit for free - to take a discussion forward one raises queries that one already knows the answers of or when he already has a position on. Secondly, when someone puts down a statement or an assertion it's generally loaded and has an agenda behind it - which normally is to take the discussion into a certain direction or a certain realm...now shoo.

Haha! look whose passing about unwanted tidbits now!
Hypocrite much ?

So you wanted to take discussion to US helping India in 1971 ?
As I said it just made you look like an utter, utter fool since anyone with less than decent knowledge knows about US activities in 1971.

And why the attitude ? Who pooped in your custard ?
Finally let me give you one tidbit myself- good manners are appreciated everywhere.

some sort of stronger defence pact is not a bad idea - they are calling it a 'LSA' but the terms such as naval vessels and personnel positioning sound much more than that, more like a base. On top of that the terms 'mutual access' makes zero sense whatsoever - how the heck is India going to position material and personnel in US bases!

If a base is desired and acceptable, it should be done openly as such instead of subterfuge. Open approach is necessary and possible between USA and India.

It's a Master Stoke . Anyway us know about our ports and stuff . Giving access to them be a check mate of China string of pearls. It's a nice move to negotiate with China to rap up its operations in indian ocean. .. Am sure Russian will put pressure on China to stay away from Indian ocean so India won't allow USN a grand access to IO. .... Nice move If u ask me

China is far more powerful than Russia. They cant influence China

Nope. This is the only way it will pass muster. Diego Garcia is a pretty good option for India.

That's obvious. .but some voices say that it was the US that forcefully stopped pakistan from taking advantage during the 62 war as well as discouraged china to get engaged during he 71 war...no idea how much of that is true..

The underlined part is completely wrong, the Nixon administration tried their best to get China to apply pressure on the border. It was the timing which made many areas inoperable for China & the threat of a strong Soviet response that stopped China.

It is logistic alliance and is mutual. good move by Modi.

Hi,

Is it a story or is there some truth to it---when east india company came to india--a british doctor treated the emperor---on getting well he asks what do you want---the doctor stated land that a skin of a ox can take---the emperor agreed---ater finds out that it was like three sq miles---the skin was cut into thin strips and tied and made into a rope and stretched to circle an area f land.

So I don't know if there is any truth to it or not---but you people must have the joke about the camel and the Bedouin----!!!
