Research calls for new dams to save Pakistan

Huh I thought this thread was about dams?!

I recently on a field trip visited the worlds only tidal barrage of industrial size at La Rance in France.

India has plans for similar tidal generation at the Gulf of Kachchh and I was wondering if Pakistan had any plans towards this type of power generation?

National concensus would be a good idea but still we need approval from atleast three provinces inorder to build this dam and I don't see Sindh agreeing with this under any civil government.

Musharraf should have pushed the project and built it under his command.

You are right Gen M had the best chance of pushing it thru.

The problem with Kalabagh Dam has been ongoing since 60s We have seen Ayub, Yahya, Bhutto, Zia and Benazir, NAwaz Sharif and Musharraf during this tenure and none of them have had the guts or the will to push it through. This reflects the complexity of the problem which nobody wants to undertake.
I think we shouldset this matter to rest once and for all. There should be a presentation in NA which should be televised openly.The presentation should be from the International Firm which ahs done the feasibility studies. All members should be asked to listen to them. All questiuons asked should be answered by the experts in open. then the NA should hold an open ballot. If all questions are answered to MNAs satisfaction in the open, logically they should not have any objection left and the Government shouold be able to push things through. However, will logic workin the PAKISTANI national asssembly-------Am I asking too much????? my only contention is if the debate is held on record, on national Television, will the MNAs have the "Sharam" to vote with their brains !!!

I agree with you. The biggest problem facing Asia is not Kashmir or Palestine but scarcity of food and water.

Dear SA,

Water conservation is non existant in Asia except on paper. Having the oppurtunity to visit Bombay I was really sad to see raw sewage pouring into a river and then to see a mile below people washing themselves and their clothes.

I also saw several shanties built on the banks of the river choking it.

As the population grows I think water will be something people will fight over.

I doubt any other country in that region including Pakistan is better of.

China's water conservation is at 200% efficiency. That is regards to your observation on Asia.

Pakistan has water conservation efficiency of around 15 percent, extremely low.

Bhutto had observed the Kalabagh Dam, however, after building one of the worlds largest dam in his own tenure the Tarbela Dam, resources were required, I will be happy to find the source from his books just need time.

The Kalabagh Dam was scheduled for him to approve however, resources and money were one of the factors and than the execution of ZAB extermination of constitution.

Bhutto convinced all provinces to accept and declare the Constitution 1973 as theirs. The Kalabagh Dam controversy is that the provinces feel unsafe and threatened by unfair justice if occurred, who will protect them, in the 1973 constitution Bhutto added clauses that protect Provinces and allows them to seek justice in Supreme court and so on, however, every dictator takes a mock at the constitution, how would you expect the Kalabagh Dam to be initiated, we need Political harmony respect and most important making the Parliament and Constitution supreme. With these in effect, the Dam shall be constructed.

i would love to see what he did in his time. However it is my impression, rightly or wrongly that the provincial objections are not justifiable and can be sorted. if only somebody would have the courage to do so. nawaz Sharif also raised his voice but it was drowned out in negative comments.

Another evidence to why resources and money were exhausted was due to the large scale tunnel projects that were initiated in Baluchistan and else where, some of these are civilian others have been classified under government, and I mean countless were built.

Do you know this project is older then we think. Studies on this dam were first carried out before Pakistan was even created, the British were the first to study this project.

what tunnel projects - pls elaborate on the civilian ones at least!

Do you know this project is older then we think. Studies on this dam were first carried out before Pakistan was even created, the British were the first to study this project.

its the most suitable downstream choice for a dam/resorvior/hydro-electric project.
