Turkey has already superseded its 2023 target for installed geothermal capacity, prompting an upward revision of the 2030 target to 4,000 megawatts (MW), General Directorate of Renewable Energy (YEGM) head Oğuz Can said on April 11.

Speaking at the opening session of the Geothermal Turkey Workshop and Congress, held in Ankara, Can said Turkey had a geothermal target for 2023 of 1,000 MW of installed capacity, which has already been achieved.

“Turkey ranked fourth in the global geothermal energy league in terms of installed capacity in 2017 so works should continue without interruption,” he added.

“We, as the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, think geothermal energy is a sector in which strategic and important developments need to continue,” Can said, adding that the introduction and creation of new areas should be carried out systematically.

He also recommended that geothermal energy be used not only for electricity production but expanded out for the use in the agricultural sector.

YEGM is the sole governmental body in Turkey to develop policies and strategies in the areas of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

The Geothermal Turkey Workshop and Congress, organized by Turkey’s Geothermal Electricity Power Plant Investors Association, started on April 11.

YEKDEM was launched in 2011 to use the country’s vast clean energy resources efficiently and to support their development.

Do you guys have any info about what is the price of one solar panel and how many are enough to meet the electricity needs of a family?
In many parts of Turkey the sun shines bright for more than 80% of the year so solar panels can be a very useful thing for many households. If more homes are nicely isolated and more energy efficient we can decrease our energy imports maybe not by very much but still enough to save some money in the long run.

Direct contact steam condenser commissioned for Kubilay geothermal plant, Turkey

A new direct contact steam condenser by GMK Energy has been successfully commissioned for the 24 MW Kubilay geothermal power plant by Be?tepeler Enerji in Turkey.

Direct Contact Steam Condenser project has been successfully commissioned at 24 MW Kubilay Geothermal Power Plant of Bestepeler Enerji Üretim Tic. A.S.. The condenser was thermodynamically and mechanically designed by GMK Energy from Turkey.

In this project, the temperature of re-injection water at 200 tons/hour increased from 60 °C to 135 °C by using 25 tons/hour unused steam at 139 °C which was released to atmosphere due to low pressure. The total 225 tons/hour geothermal brine is sending to power plant with the additional condensed steam.

By using “Direct Contact Steam Condenser” which is specially designed by GMK Energy, Kubilay Geothermal Power Plant started to generate 1500 kWe net electricity without additional wells.

Also a special pressure-reducing turbine is used to equalize the pressure of the re-injection water with the low pressure steam, and additional electricity with 60 kWe is generated by using this turbine.

This project is also an environmentally beneficial by using unused waste steam that was thrown into the atmosphere is used in electricity generation.

Enerjiatlasi stopped sharing energy production statistics since mid of april. Do we have other reliable source for that?

I guess may was a productive month for hes and res, probably we broke several domestic high records in may but sadly we don't have statistics.

A major solar boom is happening in Turkey right now. Investors, the government and ordinary people have realized that solar energy is a key element to reach our renewable energy targets. It's cheap and it's easy to put up.

Turkey registers another 648 MW of unlicensed PV capacity in March
Since the beginning of 2018, newly registered unlicensed solar up to 1 MW has reached over 1.1 GW, while total cumulative capacity has topped 4.59 GW.

Bakan Albayrak, Türkiye'de inşa edilecek dünyanın en büyük deniz üstü rüzgar enerjisi santrali ihalesinin ekim ayında yapılacağını belirterek, "Bu projenin kesin ihale tarihini yarın açıklıyoruz. Ekim gibi ihalesi yapılacak, 4 aylık bir hazırlık süreci veriyoruz." dedi.

Enerji ve Tabii Kaynaklar Bakanı Berat Albayrak, Tuzla İş İnsanları ve Sivil Toplum Kuruluşları İstişare Toplantısı'na katıldı.

Son iki yılda enerji teknolojileri başta olmak üzere çok önemli adımlar atıldığını kaydeden Albayrak, yaptığı açıklamada, Türkiye'nin ilk, dünyanın da en büyük deniz üstü (offshore) rüzgar enerjisi santrali ihalesi için hazırlıkların tamamlandığını söyledi.

Albayrak, şöyle devam etti:

"Bu yeni santral bin 200 megavat kapasitede, dünyanın en büyüğü olacak. En ileri teknolojiyle yapılacak. Asgari yüzde 60 yerlilik şartıyla türbinler üretilecek. Bir rüzgar türbini 8 bin parçadan oluşuyor. Sanayimiz işin içinde olacak, OSB'lerimizle birlikte yapacağız. Bu projenin ihale tarihini yarın açıklıyoruz. Ekim gibi ihalesi yapılacak, 4 aylık bir hazırlık süreci veriyoruz. Yüzde 80 yerli mühendis şartıyla bu dönüşümü başlatıyoruz. Türkiye, sadece yatırım çeken büyüyen ekonomisiyle değil, Ar-Ge geliştiren bir ülke olarak da ihracat üssü olacak. Her yıl 3-5 bin megavat yenilenebilir enerji için, 5-10 milyar dolar ekipman ithalatı yapıyoruz. Türbinler, güneş panelleri Türkiye'de üretildiği gibi bölgede ihracat anlamında da büyük bir pazar açacağız. Bunu kendi insan kaynağımızla yapacağız."
A tender will be held in october of this year for a 1200 mw offshore wind farm. The tender has a condition of the windmills being 60% locally produced. It also has a condition of 80% of the engineers being local.

Renewables accounted for 93 pct of installed power last year

Turkey last year added some 4,025 megawatts (MW) to its installed power capacity, around 93 percent of which are in the form of renewables, according to Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Dönmez. The minister wrote on Twitter that the majority of Turkey's newly installed power capacity – around 642.1 MW – was in the solar energy sector, followed by hydroelectric power with 889.9 MW. Meanwhile, an installed capacity of 509.4 MW was put into use last year, of which 331 MW uses lignite and 271.3 MW uses natural gas.

Last year, 218.8 MW of installed power generated using geothermal energy was put into use. It was followed by 139 MW using biomass and 24 MW using imported coal.

The total new power generation in 2018 was 4,025 MW, of which 40.8 percent was provided by solar, 22.1 percent by hydroelectricity. 12.7 percent of the capacity came from wind power while 8.2 percent was provided by lignite-fired thermal power. These sources were followed by natural gas with 6.7 percent, geothermal with 5.4 percent, biomass with 3.5 percent, and imported coal with 0.6 percent.


Thus, along with the other items that came into power generation, domestic and renewable energy sources constituted 93 percent of the total installed capacity last year.

Turkey hits 5 GW of registered PV capacity
A total of 1.58 GW of new PV systems have been registered with Turkey’s grid administrator in 2018. Of this new capacity, 1.51 GW is in the unlicensed project segment, for arrays up to 1 MW in capacity, while the remaining 63 MW is for larger projects that had been successful in bidding for PEKA auctions.

Turkey’s cumulative registered PV capacity has reached 5 GW (AC) as of the end of November 2018, according to new statistics published by the country’s state owned grid operator, TEIAŞ.

According to these figures, in the first eleven months of this year another 1,581 MW of PV systems were registered by the grid operator, of which 1,518 MW for unlicensed solar projects not exceeding in size 1 MW and around 63 MW for licensed larger projects being built under the country’s auction scheme.

Most of this capacity was registered in the first quarter of this year, when 1,170 MW of new projects were included in TEIAŞ’s official statistics. In November, newly registered PV capacity came in at 78.8 MW.

Overall, unlicensed small solar parks still account for the vast majority of Turkey’s total cumulative PV capacity with around 4.92 GW, while solar parks with a capacity over 1 MW account for only 81.7 MW.

The global geothermal power generation capacity has reached 14,600 MW at year-end 2018, with an addition of 587 MW in 2018 and the largest chunk added by Turkey and Indonesia.


Continuing its gradual growth, the geothermal sector has added 587 MW in power generation capacity worldwide from year-end 2017 to year-end 2018.

Additions in 2018 were:

  • Turkey – 294 MW
  • Indonesia – 139 MW (additions in Sorik Marapi and Lumut Balai, were planned to add 95 MW this year, but did not connect to the grid ahead of year end)
  • U.S. – 48 MW
  • Iceland – 45 MW
  • New Zealand – 25 MW
  • Croatia – 18 MW
  • China – 15 MW
  • Germany – 3 MW
  • Unclear – 1 MW
When exploring the actual growth over a 10 year period (additions from 2009 to 2018), the below is the picture:

  • Turkey – 1,317 MW
  • Indonesia – 956 MW
  • U.S. – 599 MW
  • Kenya – 509 MW
  • New Zealand – 421 MW
  • Iceland – 180 MW
  • Italy – 134 MW
  • Chile – 48 MW
  • Others – 177 MW
