Religious Hindus get together to donate for Muslim girl's treatment

I pointed out the problem with pseudo-secularism as well. Secularism, true separation of religion and state is vital and important. Two of my idols in this regard, Jinnah and Attaturk, are ideal personalities who have defined this well. Going against this has resulted in what is present day Pakistan's Mullah problem.

You think many Pakistan's Muslims are not generous towards Christians and Hindus? Like in India, minorities (Hindus and Christians) are famous celebrities, political leaders, artists, writers and heroes to the youth. What remains the issue is secularism whereby they are denied their fundamental human and national right to be equal citizens in their country. If I took up examples of Edhi foundations numerous generous initiatives and said "Wow we are secular" I would be a liar and a rotten one at that.

As I said, our secularism is a work in progress. And it has not been easy.

The creation of Pakistan ensured that. That is a burden that has to be hoisted by all - by our Hindus and Sikhs, as equally by our Muslims.

It has not been easy.

What would be easy is for me as an Indian to pooh pooh your nation and your moral right to debate secularism with us.

But that would be too easy.

I don't have to live in Pakistan. I live in India. Hence it is what happens here I am fundamentally concerned about.

I do not see myself as a minority, though technically I am.

I do not see myself as Bihari or Maharashtrian, though I was and am respectively.

I see myself simply as an Indian. That is all that really matters for all of us.

That is how we formed a modern nation state so diverse and at odds that no one gave it a chance of holding together.

That is how the world sees us. As a modern nation, of an ancient civilization and people.

That is our identity.

Pseudo-secularism sucks. Appeasement politics sucks.

Paranoia, persecution complex, and ghettoism sucks.

We have all of those. All things we need to do away with. Permanently. Together.

Omg, this has nothing to do with secularism.

The lack of dictionaries in India really annoys me.

A Sikh sneezed, a parsi said "bless you", India is a truly secular state.

This is always the case for secularism in India.

sec·u·lar (sky-lr)
adj.
1. Worldly rather than spiritual.
2. Not specifically relating to religion or to a religious body: secular music.
3. Relating to or advocating secularism.
4. Not bound by monastic restrictions, especially not belonging to a religious order. Used of the clergy.

Wow, I'm amazed that they let you learn and use the word "Secular" in your country. Whoever allowed this should get the Nobel Peace prize.:woot:

I would prefer to spend my life in a nation where all communities look at each other as Human beings first, and do not discriminate on the basis of religion/belief/skin etc. We all know how the minorities are treated in modern day Pakistan, and some brave men have lost their lives trying to bring equality (with no effect).

Secularism does not mean lack of Spirituality, because Spirituality does not require us to differentiate between human beings.

Please dont try rebuking me with one off incidents that happened many years ago or things happening in some rural villages.

Lastly, I would NEVER want to live in a Nation where opinions/beliefs are simply forced upon you, and you are not allowed to question or use your own rationality.

This is a great example why the world respects India, the diversity and the tolerance for different religions and peoples is amazing in India, no wonder India is quickly rising on the world stage, it's because Hindus, Muslims, Jews, Buddhist, Jains, Sikhs, Christians are all working together to push the country forward.

It's one reason why India is moving forward, because all these religions firstly consider themselves Indian and don;t let religion and hate get in the way.

India is an amazing place, and is showing the world how you can do things through peaceful means.

That is almost always the first impulse.

In Pakistan, secularism is a word of abuse. It is not something that the wider society wants or even looks at favorably.

In fact it goes against the very grain.

If secularism were indeed a possibility, a country based exclusively on religion would have no merit.

The two nation theory, if extended, means that no Muslim can ever be a loyal citizen of any non Muslim majority country.

All the arguments made for justifying the TNT are equally applicable in almost any non Muslim majority country anywhere in the world.

A successful secular democracy in India is something especially irksome. Holes have to be punctured in it all the time. Every aberration needs to be magnified and held as the rule rather than the exception it is.

People should get comfortable with the fact that Indian secularism has nothing to do with Pakistan or Pakistanis. It is not there to impress them and they have nothing to do with it.

Just accept the current reality and move on. No need to justify what happened 65 years back every living second.

That's the western way of secularism, who told you that's the only way secularism can be achieved?

Why should India which has never gone through the buffoonery of Church vs State in his history, has to implement French or Turk way of secularism.

Our take on Secularism is to accept all religions, be tolerant of each other difference. And dare I say we are doing rather good considering no other country faces such diversity that India has.
