Religious clashes erupt in India

BBC NEWS | South Asia | Religious clashes erupt in India

At least 40 people have been injured in religious clashes on a remote delta island in India's eastern state of West Bengal, police say.

Fifteen of those injured in the clashes on Sagar island, at the confluence of the Ganges and the sea, were policemen.

Supporters of the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh(RSS) and local Muslim villagers clashed after the RSS set up a camp in the area.

This caused unease amongst Muslims, who have a large population on the island.

The RSS is active throughout India and is the ideological fountainhead of India's main opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Hindu group is trying to expand its organisation in West Bengal, particularly in the Muslim-dominated border districts, where they say illegal migrants from Bangladesh are slowly becoming a majority.

Wave of unrest

Mohsin Ali, a local resident, said that supporters of the RSS had raised "provocative slogans" in the area.

The RSS however blamed Bengal's ruling Marxists for instigating the attacks.

RSS leader Bijoy Addya told the BBC that the Marxists provoked the local Muslims into attacking the RSS supporters.

"We had conducted the training camp peacefully. But from the very beginning, we sensed a conspiracy to attack us and that finally happened," Mr Addya said.

But Marxist leader and state minister Kanti Ganguly denied the RSS charge.

"The RSS is a provocative organisation and if they raise slogans against a community, some reaction is bound to happen. There were clashes and now they have been controlled," Mr Ganguly said.

West Bengal has seen frequent violence and shutdowns recently.

On Thursday, more than 30 people were injured and the army had to be called out to control clashes between Bengali and Nepali residents around the town of Siliguri.

I think its safe to say that the RSS does not have peaceful intentions and the fact that it came into Muslim areas was to pick a fight.

Hope the RSS doesn't lashout elsewhere in India where it can.

.
RSS does not have good intensions. They want everybody in India to shut up and listen to them. This is just a tip of the ice berg, wait till the BJP is the power. They are changing History books of India to ilustrate how RSS contributed to India's independece fight and how they fought against muslims in 1947.

.
Stopping Bangladeshis from crossing over to India is not good intention ? well it may be said that they are doing this due to animosity with particular community.
But who stops the particular community from taking the lead in stopping the Bangladeshis from crossing over ?

Bangladeshis are nuisance in most part of India if not stopped they will soon change the demographics of India

We tend to assume that since these are religious clashes, the ruling Marxists have nothing to do with it.

Reality is quite different. Marxists are known for their ruthless tactics to keep their mandate. Nandigram wasn't an isolated case, and it won't be surprising if the Communists are instigating the locals against the RSS to protect their votebank.

Thought I don't agree with the teachings of the RSS, they are usually quite benign in conducting their business and don't go around instigating riots.

.
The CPM may have a hand to keep the vote-bank.

Recently Muslims in WB have started distancing themselves from the left and it may be a ploy to scare them back.

RSS is not just one group, its an organizations. BJP being its political wing, Bajrand Dal and Shiv Sena is its arms wing.

Tell me if there are any similarities between RSS and NAZIS.

Until we can learn to think pragmatically as a nation, we will always be compelled to use the ideological crutch to get the job done.

As far as Hindutva is concerned, I'm afraid that its rise seems inevitable. There is nothing we can do except keep it as benign as possible and hope that it does more good than harm.

India's constitution is not under threat, even if the BJP does manage to secure the absolute majority in Parliament.

India has alternate power centers - The judiciary, the media, the bureaucracy and the armed forces.

Moreover, I know that there are enough sane voices within the BJP.

BJP can never come to power on its own.

It will have to be a coalition and the allies have ensured that the RSS is of no consequence.

I have some trust in Supreme court but media can be manipulated. Breaucracy, please dont get me started on this. Armed forces, It took 3 days to deploy armed forces during Gujrat riots. Thousands people were already dead when forces were deployed.

The Judiciary is pretty damn hard to manipulate. If you don't understand why, then take my word for it.

Armed forces deployment has nothing to do with the constitution.

Oh and please do get started with the bureaucracy.
