At least I get some...She has my condolences.
I figure that for the race conscious Chinese boys here, it matters.(p.s. I don't recall asking about her ethnicity)
Article is way too shortsighted, but yeah it's true China's first carrier won't amount to much compared to US-carriers. That said it's a necessary precursor, a good training tool, and probably enough to intimidate the weaker countries of the region.
Also Dangerroom is not particularly a good info source for miltech. It's entertainment, primarily aimed at Americans who dislike US miltech advances.

As in F-35 bashing?
Wouldn't that be the military supporters? I recall that Kopp disliked the F-35 very much and was a big supporter of F-22s.
Hate to say it, but it pretty much is. 1960s hull, what do you expect? Even if you add glitter like HQ-9, Type 1030, J-15s, or FL-3000Ns to it, it will still be based on a 1960s design.
The hull was built in 1980s, but it was a Soviet 1980s AC, not American 1980s AC.
Soviet carriers are not up to to standards of their American counterparts.
LOL Varyag is just a training carrier to prepare Chinese pilots for their service onboard China's real homemade advanced carrier that will be completed by 2020. That is China's real carrier that will match Nimitz class.
