RELATIONSHIP WITH US: PAKISTAN’S OPTIONS NOW
QASIM MEHMOOD QURESHI
MAY 23, 2016

If we look at the sequence of events, starting from Jan 2016 to May 2016, there is a strategic shift in Pak-US relations. Previously, State Department of US had informed its determination to sell eight fighter jets to Pakistan. Later, US withdrew funds for F-16 deal and demanded full payment without subsidy on the sale of F-16s. Pakistan has told the US in a response that it will look for alternatives if US failed to fulfil its commitment regarding F16s. This is not over yet, though. On May 6, media witnessed another move of US congress when its members suggested blocking financial aid to Pakistan. One can easily understand that this was not a sudden change in US polices towards Pakistan, rather a planned strategy. The speculations stemming from this move are that Pakistan alone was responsible for the weakening of security situation in Afghanistan. Nothing favorable is in foresight, for either the future of Pak-US relations or for peace process in Afghanistan.

US may want to use F-16s as leverage against Pakistan and for the same old thing ‘Do More’. US has been asking Pakistan for so long to take action against Haqqanis which they consider to be the main problem in Afghanistan but in reality the Haqqanis were never powerful or capable enough to tackle the NATO forces like they did previously against the Soviets. Congress has a perception that Pakistan is using the military aid to increase its nuclear stockpiles and not using the funds in war against terrorism. This is the phenomenon which Indian lobby is also propagating for so long though they don’t have any specific logic behind this perception. Indian lobby never wanted US to sell F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan because of the fear that they would be used against India after removing the terrorists from Pakistani territory or maybe they didn’t want Pakistan to get rid of terrorism and keep on getting targeted by the terrorists.

Refusal of F-16 fighter jet s to Pakistan will lead to some serious issues for both the countries. The domestic politics of both the states will take a slight change and policymakers in Pakistan will be forced to think about the reliability of US as an ally in this war. In such scenario, one can easily assume that USA doesn’t want Pakistan to be strong and pose any kind of threat to India or gain more influence in Afghanistan. In this critical moment when Congress is not playing its part, it doesn’t mean that Pakistan should become Iran or North Korea. Even if somehow GHQ and Pentagon work out F-16 deal and 450 million dollars military aid issues, it is evident that the interests of both the countries have come to a level where they can only be described as “colliding” or “contradictory”.

Still, Pakistan has two very important cards which can be put on table at any time; first by increasing the ties with Iran and second by using China to send a strong message to USA about the options Pakistan still has. Different analysts who believe that by denying the military aid of fighter jets, USA will squeeze Pakistan may not be entirely correct because things have changed now and Pakistan has been playing a bit independently in foreign relations which were considered to be dictated by the external powers previously. Pakistan’s policy in Yemen’s case and relations with Moscow and Iran can be taken as examples.

Find it laughable the author thinks Pakistan's options against US are China and Iran.

Iran is making deals with India to bypass Pakistan on Afghanistan. China will not rock its relationship with US over Pakistan.

Pakistan is making the same mistake In banking on "allies" to fight its fight.

How many drone attack had been made over Pakistan soil? when Pakistan cut tie with USA? Pakistan and China are both nature friends because both have one enemy.

.
AUthor seems to missed few things ,Iran is going to be New Boy for Us in the region and Pak relationship to Russia which were little cold until recently may seem to be warming up after this .China we are already working with on CPEC ,What Pak needs to do and which it is doing is to connect Central Asian states thru Pakistan

Don't like the drone strikes? Blame the army, they can shoot them out of the sky any time they want, or at least get the Americans to shut down their airfield in Pakistan. But they stay silent, I wonder why...

Maybe it's because these strikes are actually productive for Pakistan. Look, a civilian death because of drone strikes in Pakistan has not happened in a good few years now. They aren't as bad as people say.

Pak army is expert more than us in their task, we can pray for them and Pakistan. In the case of regular war with USA we will target their friend country in our neighbor.

The US won't go to war with us, that would be incredibly stupid. We can literally nuke all their oil buddies and wipe Israel off the map. The would be incredibly damaging to the US.

Also, they would have another Afghanistan on their hands, but this time the militants will have access to nuclear technology. Not to mention Pakistan has 200 million people, where as Afghanistan has only 30 million people.

NATO is already at war with Pakistan: a covert 4th generation war! Correct, that NATO is currently unable wage war upon Pakistan the "orthodox" way due to Pakistan's nuclear weapons capacity and her relatively strong military; hence why the 4th generation warfare being waged from Afghanistan with a helping hand from Bharat and Israel.
But rest assured NATO is at war with Pakistan for well over a decade.

Not true. We are a major NATO ally and receive some of the largest amounts of military aid from the US in the world. Also, Israel couldn't care less about us. Mainly because we can wipe them off the face of the earth.

USA will use our neighbor enemy, she will not engage direct with us.

No, they just want relations with both Pakistan and India mainly because India is where the real money's at, not Pakistan.

However, I am glad that many of us don't trust them, because we never should. No matter how much the West pretends to be nice, they are effectively at war with Muslims.

writting is on the wall for Pakistan if it need (its elite both past & present) to keep buisness as usual then it needs to do three things

1. do what Saudies want it to do in yemen

2. give heads of taliban faction like haqqanies and others to USA like musharraf

3.give shakeel afridi to USA

and im sure no self respecting pakistani genral or leader gonna do all that so ........?

You know, sometimes you only need to do the simplest things to come out of a tight corner.

America.....is being the pretty blond sorority girl that a Pakistani guy will never understand. She is in a relationship one day and wants to be left alone the other. Because she needs her "space". She doesn't wanna break-up with you but only wants to be on a break to "reevaluate" things.

Thats all it is folks. It's election year in town here. So there will be some mood swings, some tantrums. No full blown break ups but just a break, some distance to look at things differently. Come next year the pretty blond girl will be calling the guy again. And if the guy is smart and can deal with the tentrums, he gets to sleep with her again. And hey, no marriage either.

Some people cant understand the meaning of nation's own strategic interest.
