Fire Protection Engineering Archives - Historical Survey of Multistory Building Collapses Due to Fire

A fire-initiated full collapse of a textile factory occurred in Alexandria, Egypt, on July 19, 2000.6 This 6-story building was built of reinforced concrete, and its fire started at about 9 a.m. in the storage room at the ground floor. Fire extinguishers were nonfunctional, and the fire spread quickly before the firefighters could arrive. An electrical short-circuit accelerated the fire spread. At about 6 p.m., nine hours after the start of the fire, when the blaze seemingly was under control and subsiding, the building suddenly collapsed, killing 27 people. Figure 3 shows a photograph of this collapse.

This is a concrete structure. Concrete exhibit different behaviors than steel when exposed to fire. Concrete is actually FAVORED over steel if fire is the sole consideration.

Concrete has a low thermal conductivity (50 times lower than steel) and therefore heats up very slowly in a fire. It is the low thermal conductivity that provides good inherent fire resistance of concrete structures.

Steel is used for strength versus material. There are trade-offs. So if a reinforced concrete structure can collapse due to fire, so can a steel structure. Further, this reinforced structure is only 6 stories tall. WTC7 was 52 tall.

So if a steel column is exposed to fire long enough, and if it is a supporting structure, the weight from above will accelerate the steel column's collapse. The expansion have no place to go, just like the sun heated railroad tracks in the source above.

This is one of the stupidest line of arguments regarding Sept 11, 2001. The vast majority of the videos of the WTC towers came from non-governmental sources. That is undeniable. News camera footage are spur of the moments events, very seldom planned like an announcement from the government when there will be a press briefing. We have no videos of when the first aircraft struck the first tower. Why? Because no one expected it. I mean to say that using science to see if they were planes or not. Or using science to see if it was a controlled demolition. I think that they were planes, i just want to know who had control over them and i'm just not convinced that some guys in a cave from Afghanistan could pull 4 hijackings off simultaneously within the same hour.

The older the building, the more likely that this sort of things can happen. Record keeping were not exactly computerized like today. Prior to the actual demolition day, as in months, depending on the structure, it can take tons of explosives to be installed. So you are saying that NO ONE in New York City, one of the busiest in the world -- NOTICE A THING going on in BOTH TOWERS...???

There is but the camera at the pentagon was not a continues frame camera. Fact: hundreds of eye witnesses seen the plane hit.

Following buildings in China didn't fall after burning like a furnace..... 911 fires were not even close... & WTC-7(Solomon's building) had almost NO fire...

The following buildings also didn't have fully loaded jetliners smash into them at 500-600 mph, did they?

Several factors caused the collapse:

1. A freakin jetliner hit the building, causing damage to the support columns.

2. The fire proofing was blown off the support beams which caused the beams to sag, in turn causing the outer-walls to cave, after a certain point they gave way.
