I did all of my schooling in Delhi, back then.. mid 90s, after one's 10 standard, we had to choose certain subjects over others to 'major' in. Back at the time, it was very common thought that Sanskrit was the easy way out.. "falam, faley, falani.."
Kindergarten level basics was all one was required to "master", hardcore Hindi literature by comparison.. dear lord !!

One of my maternal forefathers, great granps, apparently, translated a few works from Sanskrit to Hindi and English. I was lucky enough to have my granpa's younger sibling ("cousin nanu", a professor of sanskrit himself) coach me for the 2 years I had to do it.
I scored quite well.
