Afghan MP Abdul Latif Pedram is the head of National Congress Party PHOTO: Facebook

ISLAMABAD: An Afghan lawmaker has claimed that Afghan and Indian intelligence agencies and some “other parties” are out for his blood after he called the Durand Line an internationally recognised border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Abdul Latif Pedram, head of the National Congress Party, told influential Afghan newspaper Arman-e-Milli in an interview that he suspected that Indian intelligence was part of the plans being hatched against him because India wants to serve its own interests in the country in view of the ongoing differences between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Pedram, who is an ethnic Tajik and a member of the Wolesi Jirga, the lower house of parliament, from the northern Badakhshan province, has been under fire since he made the remarks earlier this month to reporters saying his party recognises the Durand Line as an official border.

Afghan parliamentarian backs Durand Line as border

Some Afghan MPAs have reportedly demanded that he should be stripped of his parliament membership and stoned, while local media has also criticised him.

“Pedram should be questioned inside the parliament as well as in the court of public opinion, because this is a vital matter for the Afghan territory and nation,” the Afghanistan Times wrote in an editorial. “Statements in favour of recognition to the Durand Line as a permanent border with Pakistan would be an insult to our martyrs. Territorial history and integrity cannot be compromised at any cost,” it added.

The MP’s remarks and the subsequent reactions reflect the deep divide within Afghanistan over the approximately 2,500 km Durand Line, which Pakistan calls a “settled and closed chapter”. But Afghan leaders insist its fate will be decided by a Loya Jirga, a council of Afghan elders.

Pedram told Arman-e-Milli that security threats against him have been increasing because of his statements urging the Afghan government to formally accept the Durand Line as a border, and because of that “some parties” plan to eliminate him.

“My statements regarding the crisis around the Durand Line echoes the dark realities of today’s Afghanistan and the people of Afghanistan want this crisis to be solved immediately,” the newspaper reported, quoting Pedram.

100-km of Durand Line to be fenced

Pedram said his position on the Durand Line has its supporters and opponents, but he believed around 80 per cent of Afghans want the border to be formalised.

“My latest position is the reason why security alerts are high and my life as well as my colleagues’ lives are in danger,” the Afghan lawmaker said.

He added that he learnt through a credible source that the National Directorate of Security, the Afghan intelligence agency, is trying to create files and cases against him, while the National Security Council was also trying to influence him.

“A large plot is in the making and some circles are trying to physically eliminate me,” the Afghan leader claimed. “The conspiracy is not only against me, but also focuses on my supporters in different government organisations.”

Pedram insisted he will not retreat from his position and will work to champion the idea as a plausible solution to Pak-Afghan differences.

afghanistan and pakistan need this kind of sensible persons..

afghan Govt has been brainwashed by RAW.. if common afghans cant understand indian lobby in afghanistan. then they should not claim their country as a sovereign country where everyone is busy to get their own benefits from afghanistan.

india is fulfilling the pocket of some afghans politician including NDS, and they are selling their soils to india against pakistan.. it is true modi said india will fight against pak till the last afghan.

pakistan should demand his protection by afghan officials.

. . .
Hes had an interesting career, hes been a staunch opponent of the Soviets, Taliban, and Karzai, and also played an important role in the Northern Alliance. Hes also got a lot of international awards for his work as a politician.

If he does get assassinated, The only ones losing will be the Afghan people.

.
Interestingly hes an Tajik who are usually all toxic against Pakistan, that means everyone in Afghanistan is now pissed at this politician.

The durand line is a big thing in Afghanistan, especially among the pashtuns. The Afghan pashtuns from the duranni era have believed in an ideology of Afghanistan being a pashtun country and the land south of the Durand line is theirs. This does not only cause tension with Pakistan as this man noted but also among the smaller Afghan groups not given an identity like the Tajiks Hazaras Uzbeks and Baloch with some calling for the formation of Khorasan.if pashtun means afghan and afghan means pashtun what the hell are non pashtuns doing there? The position of the Afghan government is hypocritical. These minority groups do not want the demographics of the country to change more than they have already. According to statistics and various sources pashtuns are 42-60% of their population. Afghanistan has not had a non pashtun as ruler for many decades.

This ethnic tension is eating Afghanistan alive but they blame Pakistan and seek territory of the Pakistani pashtun who is much better off economically and his culture has been saved from what the taliban did in Afghanistan. Clearly all politicians who denounced Pedram belong to the pashtun ethnic group. Afghanistans refusal to accept the current borders is the reason of a lot of tension within Afghanistan and Pakistan and its ethnic groups internally but it refuses to acknowledge this.

Also I haven't met any tajik or hazara either with a positive view of Pakistan even though here on the durand line our views converge. Perhaps the only group even a little sympathetic to Pakistan is the hizb e islami though some of its cadres also despise our country.

Mashars of Pakhtunkhwa/FATA. Opinion?
@Fawad Masīd @RealNapster @karakoram @Spring Onion @Abu Zolfiqar

For all afghans. Zama watan Pakistan de aw da zamunga Pakistan de. Pashtun or nominal/unproven pashtun like me. We accept the durand line. If you don't then join Pakistan. That is the only logical solution 30 million pashtuns of Pakistan will not join 14 million from Afghanistan. 180 million Pakistanis will not join 35 million Afghans. It will be the other way around. Always the smaller country joins the bigger one. Its basic logic. Stop bashing Pakistan. You know we are richer and superior in culture but then why try to break our country when Pakistani Pashtuns and other were the ones who gave you shelter?

Pashtunistan is a dead horse, Afg govt in past tried their best to take back Pakistan territory by force but they miserably failed they invaded FATA and Chaman in past but that didnt work for them...

- Blaming Pakistan for every problem is their habit, it was Afg who tried to take territory from Pakistan by force and always funded anti state elements in Pakistan but still on many occasions Pakistan gave them a helping hand & for over 70 years Pakistan didnt ask them why u are visiting Pakistan or show us VISA & Other documents they were allowed to visit Pakistan without any troubles they have been getting education in Pakistan since decades + getting almost free treatments in Govt Hospitals with free medicines or subsidized medicines & in end we Pakistanis had to bear the burden and govt resources/tax payers money have been wasted on these Thankless ppl & still they are not happy !!

- TBH i will never ask them (Afghans) if u want to join Pakistan or not whether they join Pakistan or not their hate for Pakistan will remain the same..As soon as we seal the border the better it will be,Pakistan should have sealed the border decades ago but at least Pak govt is sealing it now, which is a good sign...i hope Pak govt will build a wall along the entry points and fence rest of the border.. not a single country in their neighborhood is willing to take refugees from Afg..The only country which has helped them for decades is now turning his back on these ppl, the appeasement of Hindustan and the anti Pakistan terrorists camps which are flourishing in afg under the Afg govt eyes speak volumes of what they want, as Abdul Latif Pedram said that RA&W + NDS are after his life should clear things up for those who have a soft corner for Afg and India...Pakistan govt should protect this guy (Abdul Latif Pedram) or give him political Asylum in Pakistan, we can use him whenever we want..

- Afg cant take care of their own ppl and yet they talk abt snatching land from Pakistan..

Brother I fully agree with you. Despite our links Afghanistan has purposely adopted a hostile stance towards us and the hatred has not disappeared at all. I don't know what to do. On one hand I love pashtuns and am not inclined to do division between them but what can I do, despite all my love for pashtuns, Pakistan comes first and I would advise the same to any lover of any ethnicity. I will never let my country be abused by these foul mouthed afghans.

As for your post, beautifully put sir. Tribals too have suffered from Afghan influx. Using the exclusivity and secluded areas and porous borders Afghan nationals have set up forts in south waziristan. As far as I know it was in your agency as well south waziristan. A lot of the locals live in forts too but most live in small mud brick houses. Afghans have made forts and shoot at whoever comes near. I am sure you have heard of it. They are mostly drug barons and mafia heads using the area's lack of reach of law enforcement as a weapon. I have heard FATians want them out.

Btw I am sure being Maseed you have many stories. If I had met you earlier on this forum when I was writing my first book you might have been a valuable source. My book covers maseed areas like Sararogha, Makeen, Ladha. Even burki area of Kaniguram. Needless to say I know the tribal make up of Waziristan and which tribe lives where. Mostly only locals know this so it would be interesting talking to you about these regions which I love so much. Keep posting sir. And never let the haram khor or western based burger and pizza khor Afghans dictate how a Pakistani pashtun should behave.

before the invasion of afg it wasn't possible for Afghans to build forts in agency bcz MALIKS, SUFAID RESH & KHASADARS had a strong hold on agencies plus on the ppl, they were in control...after the US invasion of afg a lot of ppl left agencies + those who were settled in main cities & used to visit their home towns in summer they never went back bcz of deteriorating security situation, most of the talibans took refuge in fata + killed a lot of Maliks, khasadars and subsequently took over the control of vast areas + that includes S.waziristan Wana fort which was in use of khasadars + other small mid size forts-checkposts along the roads..Yep,afghan refugees had taken refugee in fata but lack of security, healthcare facilities & non availability of Jobs, lack of education facilities forced them to migrate towards main cities in Punjab,Kpk,Sindh, azad kashmir.

what is the current status of book ?? its complete or still some work is remaining ?? if its already complete & published then let me know its Name i would love to read it :)

Loved that part :p:

Afghans have made forts and shoot at whoever comes near.
in past i had some contacts with ____ & yes the afg Talibans & ttp allowed these Afghan drug lords in their territory bcz they were getting some shares so they can meet their financial needs + a lot of ttp guys were involved in kidnapping, snatching, batha collection in Peshawar + afterwards they started kidnappings & battha collection in karachi & MQM was feeling the heat bcz MQM Walas share was going down and subsequently mqm created a lot of noise in karachi that Talibans are taking over and blah blah blah bcz these TTP walas had threatened MQM walas business of batha-khori,they gave them tough time i.e before 2013...after the launch of of rangers op in karachi it has almost finished mqm walas and ttp.

I am aware of this. Others have said the same thing. Most afghans go to the cities. But a particular source told me about the forts in FATA. The building style amongst the richer families also is the same. There is a tower in the compound. The poorer families, I am told though live in small mud houses.

Its complete but would have to go into editing again. So far I want a traditional publisher and I have not convinced a literary agent yet that it is good. The details of the process would not only bore but confuse you. Suffice it to say, writing a book isn't the hard part. Convincing the various publishers/literary agents that your book is good is the hard part.

If you are interested I can send you the book in the hopes you would spread the word that a Pakistani author is trying to get by. Its a fiction novel but reality based on the situation in FATA and Swat. It covers operations rah e rast and black thunderstorm, makes a statement of patriotism and aims to educate other Pakistanis that pashtuns aren't the cause of the problem but are rather the biggest victims of terrorism. Taliban has killed mostly pashtuns.

Loved that part :p:
:)

I tried to be respectful towards the Afghan nationals. Biggest mistake of my life.

You are a fount of knowledge, sir and with your personal link with this region you can tell us much, perhaps find a logical solution to how we can finish off the taliban.

I know of the problem with MQM and it is my wish as a Pakistani nationalist that MQM is utterly destroyed, its not just violence but also weakening the ethnic unity and stability of Pakistan. A traitor like Altaf would be shot for making not only 1 but 3 anti national speeches. There is no need for ethnic parties in Pakistan. Urdu language other than any other language is more secure and at an elevated place in the language hierarchy in Pakistan. Don't know then what our relatives want voting for MQM but its part of a wider problem that exists in Pakistan.

Our ethnic history is very confusing. We migrated from Lucknow but may have pashtun blood. Only some of our relatives however know (and that als without proof) we have pashtun blood and even among them they say its unproven. Further from my mothers side we may be linked to Pir Roshan. You know the secularist and womens educations rights activist who Khushal Khan Khattak stood against. A very beautiful part of Pashtun history btw.

These pashtun links however aren't recognized by all. After partition we moved from Lucknow and did not know pashto (I learned what I know-its my commitment to ethnic diversity and Pakistaniat that I want to learn all languages in Pak) so we called ourselves urdu speakers when we moved to Pakistan (Also we moved late, my grandfather, father then mother hence our commitment to the freedom of Lucknow) However I do not believe in ethnic identity for politics but rather for promotion of culture and language but if I did have no choice but to identify as some ethnicity I would call myself pashtun due to my research and love for what I have learned in my research.

Keep posting brother. And very thankful to have met a Maseed a tribe covered extensively in my book.
