Rapper Nicki Minaj set to headline festival in Saudi Arabia

I have no idea who that singer/rapper is but the likes of Mariah Carey, Enrique Iglesias, OneRepublic, The Black Eyed Peas, David Guetta and a host of other well-known artists have already held concerts in recent years and everything was civil and decent. As well as Arab singers (local and non-local) and even opera choirs etc.

Film festivals etc.

I personally don't care and stick to local Arab artists obviously.

In any case if she is an obscene artist she should not have been invited and 99.99% of all the people will agree and not attend her concert in Jeddah.

From letting women drive to Niki Minaj ....... quite a leap. I feel Saudis have an insecure attitude when it comes to their women?

Are you joking? Saudi Arabian women are the most educated women in the entire Muslim world. Outnumber men at the universities as one of the few countries in the world. 100% literacy rate. More Saudi Arabian women have degrees from top Western universities than any other Muslim community. Saudi Arabian women are part and parcel of every community and walk of life in KSA. From scientists, leaders of the largest stock market in the Muslim world, directors of banks, Shura Council members, traffic police, military (with the recent law changes), lawyers etc.

Being protective and conservative in general has no baring on that.

Don't confuse a few 30 year old laws created under the Sahwa period, such as the moronic ban on women driving, with the reality, history or culture.

The percentage of women in the workforce is also increasing although must be improved.

I don't get the rage. Every Muslim country has been doing this for years under much worse circumstances (from an Islamic perspective). Why should such international events not be made available for Saudi Arabians and the huge expat community? KSA is opening up for tourism (huge potential, already in the top 15 of most visited countres in the world) so obviously cultural events and entertainment must be made public. That is how the world is in 2019.
People like this Ricky Mini should not be allowed though.

Lastly the man behind this idea is no other than Turki Al-Sheikh. Not MbS as MbS has much more important things to worry about. One of the most disliked and controversial figures in Saudi Arabian sport. He is the current chairman of the General Authority for Entertainment.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Authority_for_Entertainment_(Saudi_Arabia)

He has done a lot of good initiatives but clearly the idea of allowing this Ricki Minaj is a pure stupidity.

Did great with bringing the international golf tournaments and Dakar Rally to KSA months ago but ideas such as this one are moronic similar to his handling of the Saudi Arabian football federation where he is firing coaches every second.

Great news. The trash is not arriving and is not going to pollute KSA. She cancelled due to pressure from some gay rights groups, liberal weirdos and women right's nonsense. Absolutely fantastic as this news was an utter embarrassment quite frankly after reading up on her. Took a quick look at Arabic Twitter and literally 90%+ of the comments were negative about her. Respected artists have been welcome and will be welcome not individuals like that fruitcake.

Can MbS or someone else please denote Turki Al-Sheikh somehow and make him a person without any decision making ability when he has insane ideas such as inviting Nicki Minaj?

  • Fans were left buzzing after Dutch mixers R3hab and Afrojack hit the stage of Jeddah
  • Several hit songs were used for both mixing performances, including Arabic songs
JEDDAH: A Saudi city was wired for sound as two of the world’s top DJs took to the stage for an electric show of musical entertainment.

Fans were left buzzing after Dutch mixers R3hab and Afrojack put on scintillating performances of electronic dance music as part of the Jeddah Season festival.

Musician Hatoon Idrees warmed up an enthusiastic crowd playing melodies on an oud before the main event got underway.

R3hab arrived on stage to loud cheers and screams, greeting fans with the message “peace be upon you” in Arabic.

The 33-year-old record producer and remixer, whose real name is Fadil El-Ghoul, told followers: “I am from an Arabic background myself, from Morocco, so I can speak a bit of Arabic.”

At regular intervals during his performance the star said: “Jeddah, you are truly amazing.”

His repertoire included remixes of Arabic songs, including “Sir Al-Haya” (life’s secret) and “Sadmat Omar” (shock of life), produced exclusively for the Jeddah audience, prompting the crowd to sway and sing along.

And there were also versions of songs such as “Mi Gente” by J. Balvin and Willy Williams, and “How Deep Is Your Love” by Calvin Harris and Disciples.

After an explosive two-hour performance R3hab stepped aside for fellow Dutch DJ Afrojack (real name Nick van de Wall). The 31-year-old bounced onto the stage and said: “This is my first time in Jeddah, and I am absolutely loving it.”

The crowd stood and the venue quiet literally shook to the beat of his songs such as “Don’t Let Me Down” by The Chainsmokers Ft. Daya and his original featuring Wrabel “Ten Feet Tall.”

After the concert, one fan Ahmad Shokry, 18, said: “I felt like I was in a dream. I am so hyped right now; I feel like I will not be able to sleep today. Thank you, Jeddah Season, for this.”

Another music-lover, Nagham Mohammad, 28, said: “I would have never thought I would be able to enjoy such an event here. The audience made it so much better.”

Every time I hear about Nikki Minaj it reminds me of an Anaconda, does anyone know why?

@The SC

Personally I hope that we will see some old blues and jazz artists visit KSA. Not sure if they have visited already as I am not that much versed in the music industry to be honest.

Shame that BB King died 4 years ago. Would have attended his concert.

What about classic music?

What about classic music?

Yes, I like that a lot especially our own traditional music.

The Tantora Festival this winter in ancient Al-Ula was full with classical music. Andrea Bocelli visited. I hope to see Plácido Domingo visit also.

The setting was absolutely incredible judging from photos and videos.

The Saudi gov got humiliated. Rejected by some cheap low life. They tried to follow kuffar ways and the kuffar themselves slapped them.

"After careful reflection I have decided to no longer move forward with my scheduled concert at Jeddah World Fest," the singer said in a statement.

"While I want nothing more than to bring my show to fans in Saudi Arabia, after better educating myself on the issues, I believe it is important for me to make clear my support for the rights of women, the LGBTQ community and freedom of expression.""

As if you would not visit her show if she visits Bangladesh but then she would not know if a country named bangaldesh even exist.

Actually she is not familiar in Bangladesh. If she ever visit Bangladesh both Bangladeshi and she will know each other.
